Chicago

In the hospital there was a lot of time to do some thinking, especially when Leo was asleep and she was essentially alone. She thought about her conversation with Sam and all that she had left out. Did she want to go back to Boston? Nevermind what she thought about it. Would Leo? But she couldn't ignore everything about it. There were so ( Read more... )

Kim, obviously I'm not going to tell you what to do, but I will say Chicago is a great city...

And if you need a place to stay while you think things over, I've got a house...I bought it a couple months ago...There's boxes everywhere and spots of paint we were testing to see what we liked best...But it's a perfectly good house...And I'm not using it. Just haven't gotten around to doing anything with it. You're welcome to it, if you need a place to crash that isn't a lumpy hospital cot.

Thank you, John. You don't know how much that means to me.

Leo's going to be out of the hospital in a couple of days, but you probably knew that. I want to stay here with him until then. I don't want to leave him and I don't want him to be in this room for long periods of time without me. Don't worry, I'm not planning on being this way forever. I know I can't be by his side every single minute for the rest of his life, it's just now, so soon after and with Roger still out there... I can't leave him.

But your house... I was kind of thinking we'd stay in a hotel for a few days while we decided what to do, but maybe. Let me think about it. I don't want to put you out in any way at all. Staying here would be kind of a snap decision. I didn't exactly quit my job back home and eventually I'd want to find one here, if we decide to stay. Know any law firms that will be hiring soon?

"I can ask around about jobs for you. I have a whole team of lawyers at my disposal. Of course they deal more in business matters, but I'm sure they can help..."

Carter shrugs. "As for the house...I'm not using it. Kem and I were going to stay there when she was in Chicago. I bought it for her, because my apartment is too small for three people. But Kem's gone and the house is just sitting there. You're more than welcome to it for as long as you need."

If we do stay, and when I'm ready, I just might talk to you again about the lawyers you know. I'm a defense attorney and a pretty successful one. I'd like to think it wouldn't be that hard for me to get another job.

Thank you again about the house. And I was thinking, when Leo's out, whether we stay here permanently or not we'll probably at least stay for a while. Maybe if you have some free time you could show us around the city? I think Leo would need a wheelchair for that but between you and me I think he thinks his cast is cool more than anything. My only worry is the press and whether they'd bother us or not.
