So Much Summer Left To Burn, So Little Room To Hide The Chemical Accelerant

Is there a creek nearby that you can walk in? We call that sneaker-creeker. You walk around in old sneakers and look for things, rocks, crayfish.

Put on the sprinkler. Run through it.

Library story hour?

Make your own ice cream?

Make your own finger paint?

I second the sprinkler...we used to LOVE that when I was a kid.

Where we live they have free/cheap movies in the summer for kids, although I guess that would probably involve downtown and you don't want that...

We did a nature club activity where the kids measured out and marked off a square of a certain size (maybe 12 x 12?) and inspected it closely to see what all was in their square...you can find all kinds of things, maybe writing down what you see? It should be good for at least half an hour one morning before it gets unbearably hot.

Have them build something complex from card, paper, bits of wood, like a castle or similar. You could take them on walks to find materials like sticks and bits of stone for the walls, and they'll need plants to look like trees in the grounds.
