We do something like this, but very informal. Our daughter gets rewards for good school performance in the form of expensive things that she wants (like a Video game). She is currently in a year long reading competition for the highest AR point reader (they read and then answer computerized tests about the books and earn points). We told her that if she finished top in the grade that we will get her a new Nintendo DS 3D.
