Colcannon recipe

I threw a dinner party last night to usher in the holiday season. I love to eat, cook, entertain, all those good things. I throw dinner parties about once every two weeks and even hosted and catered my best friend's wedding.

On Sunday, I made the following, somewhat Christmasy themed meal:

I should very much like to attend one of your dinner parties!

I've been dying to host here, but our house is such that there's not really any space to entertain which kills the idea.

And why have I never heard of this recipe? Being part Irish it should be in my blood (and I very much love potatoes), this is one to try!

In all seriousness, should you ever come to Los Angeles, you have a standing invitation!

Are you a foodie? I noticed in your profile that you wrote "eating all the food" as one of your interests?! Any particular things you like to cook? Do you miss the foods of Australia (my husband really misses Aussie meat pies).

And why have I never heard of this recipe?
One of my guests who is Irish-American has never heard of it either. It gets play on the food channels along with corned beef around March 17. Maybe its one of those hoary old things? Why it even has an Irish jingle:

"Did you ever eat Colcannon, made from lovely pickled cream?
With the greens and scallions mingled like a picture in a dream.
Did you ever make a hole on top to hold the melting flake
Of the creamy, flavoured butter that your mother used to make?"

That would be excellent! I'm not sure when we might ever get over to LA, though my sister-in-law lives in Atlanta so we'll make it to the USA eventually. A friend of mine from high school actually just moved to LA to work for Disney and he and his girlfriend seem to be loving the life there ( ... )

you would be surprised at the pleasure a good cafe sandwich brings after years of boring ones - when I took my husband to Australia he was constantly exclaiming THIS IS THE BEST SANDWICH EVERWhat an insightful point. Its the everyday stuff we miss. I was in Japan recently (OMG, the food there is fantastic - and the best baked goods ever, I don't think even the French can outdo Japanese French baked goods). But they don't have a salad eating culture. I don't love salads, but its the start of most American meals. I really desperately craved one towards the end: dark, lefty arugula (do Aussies' call that rocket, idk), with a balsamic vinaigrette. In Japan its just tiny plates of pickles or should you go seeking for it, a plate of bland iceburg ( ... )
