dude...i totally get what you mean...i don't think anything like that has ever happened to me, but i can imagine how you feel. my kids (second grade) tell me all the time that i'm nice and i'm pretty and whatever. i take it as a compliment...but sometimes i wonder just why they're listening to me and stuff when they say something like that. like...are they listening to me b/c i'm younger (and i guess in their eyes prettier) than the classroom teacher? or are they listening to me because they respect me and like me as a teacher? so i totally know how you feel. i would say that that person is probably someone that doesn't appreciate everything we've gone through as ed. majors and will go through as teachers. a lot of people look at teaching as a glorified babysitting job. which you and i know is totally not the case. hope everything is going well!
I gotta say, when kids compliment someone on their looks, how are they being complimented in class? Do you compliment the boys as much as the girls (if at all) on physical characteristics?
And I never really thought of the idea of kids listening to me bc I'm ascethetically(sp?) pleasing. I'm pretty self centered and like to think it's because I do a good job and my passion sort of diffuses on them :) though, not always do they pay attention...
And for the record, it was someone I'm fairly close with who made this comment, so it wasn't just a rude comment by some random person, I was engaged in conversation :) And honestly, I'm pretty proud of myself for speaking so eloquently! Communicating verbally is not something I'd consider to be one of my strengths.
My first grade teacher was pretty and kinda mean and strict. We didn't listen to her because she was cute. We listened because she was the teacher. And she'd have whooped us if we didn't.
Kids compliment you on your looks because they're not sophistocated to assess your teaching style. Really, don't sweat what your kids say. That they compliment you at all is the only thing that you need to know. They like you because you're Kim, not because you're blonde and curvy. They like your energy and enthusiasm, your patience and talent for involving others in your excitement about life in general. Trust me on this one.
hehe....sorry...i was quite exhausted last night and i guess i didn't either read or understand what you said...sorry...i hope everything is going great and that you are having a wonderful semester and having tons of fun with your kids!
