Not a whole lot to say here but yes, agreed, seconded. Why oh why don't we teach our boys the basic respect for women (and themselves) that would create a culture in which rape was a serious cultural taboo?
1. I think I have to friend nimbrethil now. That was incredibly well written.
2. I live in North Carolina, but I haven't been following the Duke case as wwell as I should. Bad Byrdie.
3. I couldn't agree more. There aren't words for how much this is true. No one deserves getting raped, not even the most vile crack-addicted hooker you've ever seen on the street, or worse. That's just disgusting.
4. Women rape, too. It's not nearly as frequent [and probably underreported], but it happens. ...I'm not arguing the point, just adding to it. Everyone should be educated to not do these things to one another!
All of that said, this was a great post. Thank you for sharing.
1. By all means, check out nimbrethil's LJ. She's very well-versed on several subjects.
2. Most folks don't really want to look at garbage that's been tossed into their own back yard, not when they're not allowed to remove it.
3. No argument there.
4. (Sigh) Yes, it does happen; some women do commit rape. And yes, I'm sure it's underreported, just as raping by men is underreported. However, you are pointing out the exception to the rule, and one that is pounced on all too often by trolls that want to derail anti-rape blogs and journals all over the Web. Statistically, for every 1 woman that commits rape, there are 100 MEN who commit rape. Now given that we have a roughly equal number of men and women in the U.S., but half the population is 100 times more likely to commit rape than the other half, who must we focus that anti-rape education on?
The men, of course. Women raping men is a rare rare rare case--so much so that it probably could be handled as it occurs. I wasn't arguing the point about that. Just saying that it happens.
I wasn't trying to derail the point--sorry if it sounded like I was.
And this is why we're drilling it into Boychick's head early and often. :P Putting Girlchick into karate may reduce her chance of being raped in one or two possible situations, but Boychick and his ilk are the only ones who can actually prevent rape.
