On the TMNT movie... watch the newer version of the TV series first. The storyline felt very video game-esq in regards to giving you a basic background with a gruff voice before just throwing you in.

There were a couple good moments based mostly on nostalgia for me, but for the most part I felt as if I would have enjoyed the movie much more thoroughly had I been 10 years younger.
