Prologue

Kiseop moped around the house slowly, dragging his feet everywhere he went. He was sluggish, groggy and over all just in a bad mood. He sighed when he saw that Eli was still asleep, he decided to crawl into Eli’s bed and go back to sleep.

“Kiseoppie..We have school wake up.”

“I just got back in bed though.”

“Well, technically you just go into my bed, but that’s beside the point.”

“I don’t want to go to school Eli, I really don’t.”

“Why don’t you?”

“My mother called me this morning.”

“Kiseop, you don’t have to do anything for her. She treated you horribly!”

“She may have, but she will always be my mother.”

“We’re not discussing this. You will not go see her or help her in any way, shape, or form got it?”

“You don’t own me Eli.”

“You know I’m only looking out for you. Get out of bed we have to get dressed and eat. “

Eli shot out of bed and went straight for the bathroom, closing the door a little rougher than he should have. Kiseop could only sigh.

Kevin stared in awe at the college. It was much bigger than NH was and there were so many people who looked of all different classes walking around. He strode over to the student building; his first class would be there with Eli and Kiseop.

“Hey.” He turned around to face the voice.

“Hi.” He responded quietly.

“My name is Jaeseop, Aj for short. What’s yours?”

“Kevin.”

“You speak English?” It was a little accented, but mostly perfect.

“I’m from America, nice to meet you!” Kevin smile. He loved meeting people who spoke English. Sure his Korean was
amazing, but he is comfortable speaking in English.

“It’s your first year here I’m going to assume?”

“Yeah, I graduated from NH last year.”

“You’re that Kevin!?” He blinked in bafflement.

“What Kevin?”

“The one who graduated at top of his class, got in to this school on a full scholarship? Wow, everyone is already
talking about you.”

“Is that for real? I’m…I’m nothing special.”

“Well, everyone thought you’d be nerdy and ugly looking, not this cute.

“I’m not available.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to ask you out! Just complimenting what is very, very obvious.”

“Well, thank you for the compliment, but now I have to get to class.”  And with that Kevin began to walk away.

Kevin couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but something about Aj he just didn’t completely like or trust. He seemed like a
shifty character, someone who would trade you in for someone’s sloppy seconds or even blackmail you to gain what he wanted. Kevin normally wasn’t one to judge based on looks, but he couldn’t help it. Something about Aj was just not settling right with him, maybe it was his eyes? They were far too big and almond shaped to be trusted, that had to be it. It was his eyes, something in his eyes told Kevin not to trust him. He decided right then and there that he would avoid Aj at all costs, walking the other way when he saw him and so on. Kevin was determined to avoid him, just because of his eyes.

Suddenly Kevin was pulled from his thoughts when someone grabbed his shoulder, pulling him out of the line he was following, the one that almost allowed him to run right into a pole.

“You need to watch where you’re walking Kevin, what’s wrong?” He turned and smiled at his friend.

“Thanks Eli, and nothing, I was just deep in thought is all. Where’s Kiseop?” Eli frowned.

“I don’t know. We got into an argument this morning and he didn’t want to take the bus to school with me this morning.
My father is bringing him.”

“What’d you fight about? You guys rarely ever fight.”

“His mom called him, she told him that she’s in debt and needs help. You know what kind of help she wants to ask him
for Kevin! I told him not to care about it, but he said that she is still his mother and I just..I don’t want him to help her.”

“Eli, would you tell me not to help my parents if they came and asked for help?”

“Maybe, your dad beat you Kevin.”

“They will always be my parents Eli, no matter what they do, they always will.” He sighed hard.

“I’m going to go to class, well go find my class. I’ll see you there or later okay?”

Kevin nodded and bid his friend goodbye. Truthfully he needed to go to class, the same class as Eli but noted how his friend wanted time alone. He walked over to the grimy looking bench and took a seat, daintily crossed his legs and began to look around.  He started to really look at the campus in front of him, it was spacious and clean. The landscaping was very complimentary to the seemingly century old building, rose bushes intertwined with the vines that scaled up the building, gripping onto the frames of the windows where more flowers had started to bloom.  The willow tree that hung over the small pond seemed like a quiet, romantic even, place to sit and have lunch or study. He pictured himself there, with Kibum, curled into his chest, legs over his, just content.  It would be perfect if he and Kibum could just be together in public without getting in trouble or having people stare. He sighed hard, realizing that dream was very far from where he was now.

For a second time that morning, Kevin was pulled from his thoughts, only this time it was when a head was placed into his lap.

“Kiseopie, good morning, how are you?”

“There is nothing good about this morning, and I’m doing horrible.”

“What’s wrong boo?”

“Eli picked a fight with me this morning over my family.”

“He told me about it. How do you even plan on helping her?”

“I can get a job…or…” He looked up, eyes tearing.

“You can’t do that again Kiseop. You would lose Eli, you wouldn’t be very happy with yourself and you could get hurt. I
never want to see you like that again. Please don’t Kiseop, don’t even consider it.”

“She’s my mother Kevin…”

“I understand. I think I can understand the most about how important family is, especially when you lost them. I don’t
know what I’d do if my parents wanted to take me back, or if they needed me.”

“What am I going to do? She needs the help, my dad died last year and she needs the help!” Kevin frowned, his dad
died?

“Why didn’t you tell us your father passed away?”

“Eli told me it would be better to just forget it and move on.”

“That’s horrible! Kiseop-ah, did you visit his grave? Go to the funeral?” He felt the head in his lap shake.

“Did Eli keep you from going?” This time it was a nod.

“I really wanted to. I wanted to say goodbye.” Kevin began to pet his hair; it must have been really hard to lose his
father. On top of that he wasn’t able to see him, or tell anyone. Kiseop couldn’t find closure after the death of his
father.

“I’m going to go to the bathroom and wash my face. I’ll see you in class. Kevin, please don’t mention this to Eli, I don’t want to add to our fight.”

Kevin nodded and watched his friend walk away, he sighed again. Kiseop was more worried about fighting with Eli than dealing with his own feelings, it could be considered cute but, it also wasn’t healthy. He stood up and began to walk to class, and he had to keep reminding himself that this wasn’t his argument no matter how much he wanted to help them.

Alexander smiled when he felt a weight on his shoulder, he slipped his head phones off, saved his documents and closed his laptop.

“Hey Hoon-ah.”

“Hi hyung! What were you doing?”

“I was working on a paper that isn’t due for four days, I just got bored.”

“Do you have any classes now?”

“I’m done for the day, but I was going to wait for Kevin so we could go home together. He doesn’t get out until about
2pm.”

Alexander smiled down at his chubby faced friend, who returned the smile, cheeks bunching up high and making him
look even younger than he already did.

“Come hang out with me then! We can go get lunch or something and be back by the time Kevin gets out!”

He began to pack up his things, smiling when Hoon eagerly began to help him. Alexander had met Hoon his freshman year, when Joon had just left. He had every class with Alexander so it was very easy for them to become friends. It started with doing their homework together and it slowly turned into friendship, and he was glad for it. Until Soohyun came to college Alexander was mainly alone with no one else he knew.

“Hyung!” he shook his head, staring around, did he space out again?

“Hyung are we going or not?” He smiled and nodded, taking Hoon’s hand and leading the way to his car.

Keving melted into the bed. Today was so long, between walking to each building and dealing with Eli and Kiseop being awkward with each other, he was completely wiped. Thankfully though, he had a loving boyfriend’s apartment to go to when he was finished with his homework for the day. Kibum walked into the room with a tray of tea and cake, he placed it on the bedside table before climbing into bed with Kevin.

“Sit up, cake and tea time!” He listened and sat up against the headrest.

“Feed me, I’m way too tired to do anything.”

Kibum held the fork to his lips; Kevin opened his mouth and slowly chewed on the moist piece of cake.

“Did you make this?” Kibum nodded and fed him another piece.

“It has hot fudge in the middle. Does it flow out when you bite the cake?” Kevin nodded, so that’s what made it so
moist and gooey.

“I love you Kibummie hyung.” He smiled softly while handing Kevin his tea.

“I love you too Kevin. Did you finish your homework?” He nodded.

“Do you need help with it?”

“It was pretty basic and easy, but if I do end up needing help, I’ll come to you right away.”

Kibum leaned in and kissed his lips softly, brushing a strand of hair behind his ear and sighing softly.

“I love being with you like this.” He whispered against Kevin’s neck, making the hairs stand up.

“I love being with you too Hyung.” Kibum smiled and pet his cheeks.

“Let’s finish this cake then go to sleep.”

“I can’t stay the night hyung, I have school.”

“You’re in college, so I’ll let you stay over on school nights now.”

All Kevin could do is smile.
