Really, that was fun! But having done a fair bit of ametuer research and portrayed a Hastings era Saxon I have to defend Harold emphatically!!
Edward didn't promise the throne to The Bastard. Harold was tricked into promising to support The Bastards claim, but the witan had the final decision making power. The Bastard had to wait all summer for a favorable wind to cross the chanel, the Pope might have been behind him, but God didn't seem to agree. The Bastard landed at Piveney (sp?) and then went to Hastings. Harolds forces had just defeated all the Vikings in the world and then did a forced march from Stamford to London to Hastings and then held The Bastard at bay ALL day! I refuse to believe that The Bastards forces were setting up a trick when they retreated into the swampy area and got slaughtered! Koodos for figuring out how to take advantage of the Saxon's over excitement.
