Here we are in December once again. It happens every year. I celebrate the Christmas holiday because it is the holiday of my youth. I feel connected to my history and I confess to loving...and hating it. This post may be all over the map please forgive me ( Read more... )

We just started doing the charity thing - we're doing 5% because i figured out that's about what we do as a family, and asking him to do more than that didn't feel ok to me.

Do you guys do an allowance for Gabe? Zach definitely got less crazy about money once he had it regularly and it wasn't a big special thing to have cash.

On the gifts, can you do the charity gifts for your mom? (Do you know what I'm talking about?)

Chanukah is not as big a gift season as Christmas is, so there's not so much pressure to buy big stuff. Books? Games?

We have not been able to come up with an allowance system that works. No my mom would not do the charity gifts well.

Isaac totally got less crazy about cash also when we started giving him an "allowance". I like to call it pocket money though since it's not tied to chores or anything. He wanted to spend it really quickly in the beginning but now it has normalized for him and he saves for weeks to have enough for specific things that he really wants.

I'm also glad that Chanukah is less a big gift time than Christmas. We do small stuff like books, games, craft stuff.

Kim, I'm sorry this is being so hard for you. We are starting to do charity gifts for family members that have made it clear that they don't want more "stuff". Like gifts in their name to the Heifer Project (http://www.heifer.org/) and such.

I don't really have a good idea about how to handle this, but here are some thoughts that spring to mind ( ... )

aroraborealis speaks wisely.

Yet there is a conflict within me that sending her flowers or a lobster seems so luxurious. How can we in all good conscience celebrate when so many others are suffering right here, right now? Does my son need anything, the answer is definitely NOT. Can I say we are not doing presents because we are using this money to help buy foodThere's a twofer in here, if you want to take advantage of it with your son ( ... )
