Baekhyun sees Daisy for the first time in a playground, when she’s five years old and swinging her legs on a bench. She’s holding her hands together tight with a worried look on her face, but she looks up and sees him, and her frown turns into a wide grin. Baekhyun can’t help but smile back.

“She’s probably not looking at you, don’t be so happy,” his brother tells him. He gives him a fake laugh but thinks it could be the truth.

The next time he sees her is on the first day of first grade, when he’s shaking on his feet, knees threatening to give up on him. He puts his hand on a wall to steady himself, slowly moving to lean his body against the wall. He’s trying to straighten up when she rushes to him, small hand around his small wrist.

“Are you okay?” she asks him, voice soft. Her big eyes stare into his, full of concern.

“M’fine,” he reassures her, giving her a thankful smile.

“I’m Daisy,” she says, taking his hand in hers. He squeezes her fingers with his and smiles even wider.

“I’m Baekhyun," he replies. She nods and starts walking, leading the way to their classroom. Baekhyun stays a little bit behind her, finding that walking was a lot harder than he thought it would be.

They become best friends, always beside each other at school, sharing food because Daisy always says that Baekhyun eats too little, despite his insistence that he really doesn’t need to eat that much.

“That’s why you’re so tiny,” Daisy keeps telling him, puffing her cheeks as she hands him an apple.

“You’re tinier than me!” Baekhyun sticks his tongue at her, but accepts the apple anyway.

Baekhyun is thankful that Daisy stays by his side and always helps him up, always there to lend a hand, always there to cheer on him. He thinks she’s more beautiful than the sun set - and sunsets have always been one of his most favourite things since he can remember. He thinks she’s the brightest person ever, brighter than anything he’s ever seen on Earth.

If he didn’t know more, he would say that she’s a star.

Baekhyun realises he’s in love with Daisy one night when they’re on the same swing set he first saw her on when she was five, when they look up at the sky and he remembers the way she looked up at him, the way they smiled at each other. He realises he’s in love with Daisy when she’s staring at the stars but he’s staring at her, the awe and happiness on her face as she looks at the clear sky above them. He realises he’s in love with her when he gets the urge to kiss her cheek when he takes her hand in his, their fingers intertwining, her cheeks blushing, and her eyes shining like the stars above them.

He realises she’s in love with him too when she stares back at him and smiles, smiles the same smile she gave the stars, and doesn’t look away. He opens his mouth to say something about constellations but all that comes out is I think you’re more beautiful than all of the stars and everything in this world.

Daisy knows that Baekhyun is weak, knows because she remembers how he looked like when they first met, when he was fragile and tiny and couldn’t even walk on his own. She has never asked why, because she doesn’t want to cross a line even though she wants to know every single thing about him. She never asks because he got better very quickly after that, but then middle school comes and he’s as weak as she’s ever seen him, and she’s worried because she’s always worried about Baekhyun, when has she not been, really.

They’re sitting down on the living room couch one night when she realises it, when he stretches out his hand towards the keyboard and his fingers freeze, and he’s just staring at his hand with a frown on his face. Eventually his hand does make it there, fingers slowly pressing the spacebar, and when he rests his hand back on his lap he grips it with his other one. Daisy holds his hands and smiles at him, tries to convey It’s alright, I’m here with just touch.

She learns pretty soon that things don’t become all right just because she’s there beside Baekhyun, despite her wishes. She learns that her presence does basically nothing, even if he says it does, insists that he feels instantly better when he sees her, but she knows it’s not true because he reaches in to hug her but ends up staring at his arms like he forgot he even had them.

She cries at night because he doesn’t, because even though Baekhyun’s body is weak Baekhyun is not, he’s one of the strongest people she has ever met, so she sheds tears for the boy she loves because all he is is smiles and brightness and she never wants to lose him, she’s so scared of losing him; what will she be without Baekhyun, what will she do when he’s not there making her laugh and telling her she’s beautiful and loved and the most amazing girl in the world, what will she do without her star?

One autumn day they find themselves staying up until three in the morning watching anime and Baekhyun laughs so loud he starts coughing, and at first Daisy laughs but then he doesn’t stop coughing and there’s blood on his palm and he’s pale and he can’t even move to reach the glass of water just a few inches from him any more. She worries, she shakes with panic and lays him down on her bed, running her fingers through his hair, telling him it’ll be fine soon enough.

But she’s not magic and her words don’t come true, soon enough becomes the first day of winter, soon enough becomes the time Baekhyun is lazing on her couch drinking juice, and the juice box suddenly falls on the floor and Baekhyun is just completely frozen, his eyes empty like he’s not even there, and Daisy is so scared she starts crying at the sight and the only thing that calms her is her hand over his heart, feeling the slow beat of it, and she calms a little bit because he hasn’t left her yet and she’s so glad.

She falls asleep watching over him and when she wakes up he’s no longer there, and her heart starts beating so fast she feels like she can’t breathe.

She doesn’t see him for weeks and she really, really can’t breathe.

Baekhyun was - is - the air around her, every single inhale of breath is Baekhyun, every particle in the air, every blow of the wind. And now Baekhyun’s gone, gone without a word, and she doesn’t know where to find him because the only place he’s ever been is by her side.

She stares out her window at night, watches the stars twinkle and remembers him, the stars in his eyes so bright against the contrast of the dark brown, and she gets so antsy going to sleep that she counts stars instead of sheep. She realises that no matter how many stars there are, no matter how bright they are, there will never be one brighter than Baekhyun, never one that will light up her whole world like Baekhyun does.

But that doesn’t stop her from having a favourite star (second favourite, her favourite will always be Baekhyun. It will always, always, always be Baekhyun.) There’s a star that she always sees at night, one that shines so bright, one that calms her. She calls the star Baekhyun because it only makes sense to name a star after your favourite thing, and it just so happens that her favourite thing in the world is Baekhyun. It will always be Baekhyun.

Two months go by without him, two very painful months. Life is boring and plain, and even though she still does the same things it feels so empty doing it without him. It feels like the whole world is in black and white, no colours to admire, all just shades of grey. Until Baekhyun shows up at her door, healthier than he has ever looked before, and it takes one smile from him for her to throw herself into his open arms, and they hug for what feels like forever, but Daisy doesn’t mind because Baekhyun’s arms is the place to be.

She asks him where he’s been and he says he was at home all that time, unable to move and recovering. He tells her it doesn’t matter now, and what have you been up to? She tells him about how boring life is without him, how the very second she saw him everything became brighter and more colourful and just more, because he makes everything so much more. She tells him about the star she named after him and he blushes, tells her that’s really sweet and that he would like to see it later that night.

They do, they go up on the roof to watch the stars together, and Daisy is so excited she’s basically jumping up and down (if you could do that while sitting). They wait and wait and wait but the star never shows itself, and for a second Daisy is upset because it was the one thing she wanted to show Baekhyun, the one thing that kept her going while he wasn’t there, but then Baekhyun says, Well, I’m here now. That star was me, right? I’m here now, you don’t need another star.

Daisy figures he’s right and smiles, and they cuddle on the roof until it becomes too cold even in their thick knit sweaters.

Baekhyun looks at Daisy, thinks he’s never been as in love with her as now, because as every second passes he loves her more. He asks her when they’re inside and warm why she loves the star so much, and his cheeks fill up with so much warmth he feels like he probably looks like a very, very red apple right now.

“I liked it because… because it felt right. It made things feel right. Like home. Kinda like the way you make me feel. It was like you were watching over me.”

He smiles, smiles so wide and for so long he no longer thinks he can stop, and hugs her tight.

One day, he’ll tell her. Tell her the reason why he couldn’t walk on the first day they met, why his human body is weak and fragile. One day, he’ll tell her why she’s never been to his house, why she’s never met his parents, why he had to leave. One day, he’ll tell her that he was the star watching over her when he wasn’t on Earth, the star that showed itself outside her window to give light to her life. One day, he’ll tell her he’s literally made out of stardust, he literally shines in the night sky, that he’s literally a star and that her two favourite stars has always been just one. One day, he’ll tell her, tell her that Byun Baekhyun is not a human given birth to by two human parents, but a star who went down from the skies to be with the girl he loves.
