I nervously check my phone all the time on date nights (we've had maybe a dozen in the past year, all when my mom was able to drive down to watch the kid/s), to make sure that everything is well at home. We both make a real effort to put them down/away for any other purpose though. It's hard, because sometimes those phones are the only way we can remain connected to each other or the other adults in our world when our entire lives are based on childcare/work, and the attachment that develops is both scary, and real. I'm with Krys, with one modification; state at the beginning of the date that anyone who wants his attention during your date can just go right on wanting it. You trump. But it has to be said out loud, and every time until it becomes habit.
We place our phones face-down on the table in a stack. The first person to touch the stack before the check comes pays for the meal. It reminds us to spend time with each other, not with those who aren't there.
