Chapter One.

The loud screeching sound jolted the blond haired man out of his deep slumber.
"Bloody hell…" he cursed as he pulled the blanket over his head in an attempt to muffle the noise.

For the past five days, each day at the crack of dawn, since he moved in it has been like that. The sound is from the shutters of the flower shop, below his apartment, as the florist opens for business.

At first, Byun Baek Hyun a rather shy and reclusive man who prefers manhwa to people, decided to  ignore it and mind his own business. He had gotten such a shock on the first day that he thought they found him.  He had been keeping a low profile and practically on the run since that incident.  He never stayed long at any place, the most a week. So he figured he could put up with the noise.

He was a light sleeper, even the smallest of noise wakes him up and it was difficult to go back to sleep again. But after a long hard day at work only to just crawl into bed and to be rudely awaken seconds later he had enough. Something had to be done.

But when he complained to his landlord Mr. Zhang, the owner of the three storey building just clicked his tongue impatiently. He hates getting involved in spats between his tenants. To him as long as the rent's on time and the place maintained well, he's happy.

Instead Mr. Zhang went on to explain that previously, the florist was run by an old friend of his who had retired a few months back. He sold off his business to the current one, who hadn't bothered with any changes other than installing a new floor.
With a dimpled smile, landlord said that none of the other neighbours complained about the noise and suggested that Baekhyun take it up with the man himself.

"How am I supposed to do that?" Baekhyun asked out loud. He's never even seen or spoken to the man, all he has seen of his downstairs neighbour is a mop of dark hair and the back of his lanky frame one day on his way to work.  He once tried to peep into the shop but huge floral displays obstructed his view.

--

The next evening, a window of opportunity opened for Baekhyun as he walked home from work, he spotted the florist in the midst of closing for the day. The man was struggling with trays of small potted plants.

Baek Hyun thanked his lucky stars and hurriedly step forward offering to help.

Big brown eyes shot him a questioning look before handing him a tray and motioning with his head to put it in the shop.
Baekhyun stood aside and watched the man lock up and braced himself for the ear jarring sound as the shutters were pulled down.
The florist, oblivious to the grating sounds quietly clicked the padlock in place, nodded his thanks in Baekhyun’s direction and walked away.

A bewildered Baekhyun stared at him and was thinking what to do next when the florist suddenly retraced his steps and asked, “You’re… my neighbour from upstairs, right?”

Taken back with the sudden question Baekhyun just nodded his head only to be equally suprised at the next one.
“Uh… okay, yeah…so, would you like some coffee?”

--

The next thing Baekhyun knew he was being led through the narrow alley that separated Mr. Zhang’s building with the next. The alley brought him to the back door of the flower shop.

The florist unlocked the door and ushered Baekhyun in.
“Welcome to my humble abode… er… oh I should have done this just now,” the man grinned sheepishly and introduced himself. “I’m Park Chanyeol.”

“Byun Baekhyun,” Baekhyun bowed slightly and held out a hand but  Chanyeol had already turned away and was busy rummaging one of the cupboards. Feeling rather embarrassed he quickly hid his outstretched hand behind his back.

Sighing softly he just stood there awkwardly and began studying the cramped space. The room smelt faintly of fresh flowers and he soon found out why when he saw a dark thick curtain strung across the room separated it from the shop out front.

His eyes then spotted an old T.V balanced precariously on a battered tallboy that stood next to a plastic zip up closet. Nearby was a closed door which he presumed was the toilet and the rest of the room was made of  a sink, a portable stove on top of the kitchen cabinets and surprisingly a brand new fridge.

He blushed when looking up he saw his host leaning against the sink staring at him.

“Sorry, ran out of coffee,” He apologized while holding out a mug to Baekhyun.

“Uh…anything’s fine,” Baekhyun shyly took the mug and took tentative sip. He almost spat out the drink but good manners prevailed and he swallowed the tart juice instead. He peered into the mug and saw the dark yellowish liquid. “Wha… what is this?”

“Passion fruit juice, I love it, don’t you?” To his horror he saw his host pouring himself another mug of passion fruit juice.

How could something with such a lovely name taste so awful? Why am I blushing like an idiot? Just tell him about those damn shutters and get the hell out of here! Baekhyun felt his face getting warmer.

Baekhyun wiped his mouth with the back of his hand before putting down the mug by the sink, unaware that Chanyeol had been watching his every move.

Baekhyun cleared his throat uncomfortably, picked up his mug again when he saw Chanyeol looking at him.

“You know, actually I wanted to talk to you about…” His voice trailed off as Chanyeol took a step closer.

“Yeah?” Chanyeol prompted helpfully.

“The…um…the shutters, are awfully noisy especially … especially … in the morning. I was wondering if you could get them fixed.” Baekhyun let out an air of relief when he finished.

“The shutters?” Chanyeol gave Baekhyun a puzzled look. It was as though he had no idea what the other man was talking about.

A few seconds of awkward silence passed as both men tried to figure out what to say next. Chanyeol broke the silence first when he suddenly clapped both hands.

“Oh those, yeah… I’ve been meaning to get them fixed but …” He clicked his tongue impatiently. “Things have been so busy here lately. But I will, soon.”

“Right, well, it’s getting late. Thanks for the juice, good night Park Chanyeol ssi,” Baekhyun bowed quickly and practically bolted out of the door. He ran up the stairs to his apartment and once inside he drank half a bottle of water.

“Yucks!” He exclaimed loudly. He felt much better after that drink of water. He swore to never take water for granted again and to never drink passion fruit juice again.

Despite all that he was happy, he didn’t need a mirror to know there was a huge smile on his face. He put a hand over his heart that was beating faster than usual.

“Park Chanyeol,” he whispered softly. These last few weeks had been nightmarish, he kept looking over his shoulder, hoping feverishly that those men had forgotten about him and that they would never find him. He didn’t do anything wrong but he knew they would be after him. No way was he leaving the city that he loved, so he did the next best thing, he just kept moving.

People say after even after the darkest night, the sun will rise and shine.
He wasn’t sure about the that but he knew in his darkness he had found a spark, although it may be small now but it was still a spark of fire, warmth running through his veins, making his heart beat furiously like this.

Love at first sight? He laughed and he shook his head at how ridiculous it sounded. He had only read about it in manhwas, never experiencing it himself. But what was this feeling? He felt like cupid shot a thousand arrows to his heart that evening, maybe that’s why his heart is thumping so hard. But the timing couldn’t be any worst and totally unexpected.

“Park Chanyeol,” He whispered the name again and again. The name glided like silk on his tongue, he wondered how Park Chanyeol would taste on his tongue.

“You’re mad, crazy and stupid Baekhyun!” He screamed into his pillow, embarrassed at his own thoughts.

That night Byun Baekhyun slept fitfully for the first time in weeks and with a silly grin on his handsome face.

--

Baekhyun hated his part time job at the local supermarket, but he had no choice as not many employers would hire someone without asking too many questions. Being on the run wasn’t easy, despite trying his best at being frugal he was running low on cash and had no one to turn to.

“Good morning!”Chanyeol called out to a sulky Baekhyun. He had a broom in his hand and sweeping the front of his shop.

“Morning,” Baekhyun mumbled, waved and continued walking. He would have liked to stop and chat but he knew he was too shy and didn’t quite know what to say. It looked so easy in the manhwa but he knew from past experience it wasn’t.

“Off to work?”

“Dae.” He turned around, stopped and looked at Chanyeol. Somehow Chanyeol’s smile soothed away his troubles in fact he looked different this morning, maybe because it was brighter? He looked way more daebak right now, even with the broom and that dark green work apron which clung snugly to his hips. Baekhyun couldn’t help but notice that the fairy wings ears looked adorable on Chanyeol. Baekhyun blushed until the tips of his ears at his thoughts.

“I gotta…go,” Baekhyun stammered and ran off. He swore he heard Chanyeol’s laughter behind him.

Baekhyun was stacking up boxes of butter cookies when one of the cashiers called him. She wasn’t a local and had only just moved to Seoul. She said someone was asking for directions and wondered if Baekhyun could help out.

Baekhyun nodded and saw a smartly dressed tall man with reddish brown hair with bangs so long it almost covered his eyes, standing by the counter.

“Can I help you?” Baekhyun inquired politely as he took off his work gloves before stuffing it in his back pockets.

“I was wondering if you knew where I could get some good banchan?” The man asked with a smile on his thin lips. He spoke in a lazy drawl, his voice deep and slightly husky.

Baekhyun directed the man to the traditional market in J-dong and recommended some of his personal favourite stalls. The man stood so close to him that Baekhyun could smell whiffs of his expensive perfume. Baekhyun eyes widen with surprise when he noted that the other man also wore heavy eye make-up.

He began to wonder if the man was really interested in banchan or a robber scouting out the supermarket but was surprised when seconds later the man repeated word for word everything Baekhyun had said. After thanking the blond haired man, he bowed and left.
