“Gabe?” Sam asked as he walked into their apartment and was shrouded in a cloud of smoke. Christ he thought as slight panic rose in his throat. Hoping to god Gabriel wasn’t hurt and their place wasn’t in the process of burning down around them. And it would be them if it came down to it, no way Sam was leaving this flat, fire or no fire until he had Gabriel in his arms firm in the knowledge that he wasn’t you know... dead... or burning or any other horrible thing that made his skin crawl.
“Sam?” he heard called from what he decided was the direction of the kitchen. He breathed a sigh of relief, it didn’t sound like Gabriel was suffering a slow and painful death which was encouraging, even if it didn’t explain the copious amounts of smoke pouring through the house.
“What the hell happened?” he asked loudly as he made his way carefully through the fog to the kitchen, coughing and moving straight away to open the window despite the freezing temperature outside. Why had he decided living in New York was a good idea again? He was from Texas, and this fucking cold and snow just wasn’t right on any level. Well apart from the look of sheer joy on his boyfriends face whenever they went out in the first snow of the year... which Gabriel insisted they do ever year since they had been together. God, had it really been eight years since they had met? Wow his brain supplied before he turned to Gabriel with a ‘what the fuck’ look on his face and a raised eyebrow.
Gabriel had the grace to look sheepish... “well you see, I wanted to do something special, and you like love you know, sweet shit almost as much as me. So I um, might possibly have tried to bake you something.” Gabriel, rubbed the back of his neck, uncharacteristically shy, a blush on his cheeks that made Sam want to jump him, smoke and burning things be damned. It also told him there was more to the story than his lover was letting on.
“Again?” he asked, unable to keep the teasing and amusement out of his voice. Gabriel had a... thing for baking for him. Problem was... he sucked at it... no really, he was like five levels of terrible in the kitchen. Sam thought it was cute though, endearing and all that sappy shit his brother was forever giving him shit for. He didn’t care what Dean thought, he was stupidly happy with Gabe and he would be just as sappy about it as he pleased!
“Yeah well, you know what they say... can’t teach an old dog and all.” Gabriel grumbled and returned to his efforts of pulling a very smoky and blackened... something out of the oven. Sam was curious to see what it had once been, because even for Gabriel his boyfriend was acting a little weird.
“So what was it this time?” he asked with a grin as he moved in and crowded behind Gabriel, peering out over his shoulder. On the tray before him looked like what he thought was meant to be a giant cookie. It looked like it had once said something, there were raised blackened lines on it that might have been words, but Sam couldn’t make them out now. It wasn’t lost on him that chocolate chip cookies where his favourite thing on earth after Gabriel and maybe his brother... maybe. It made his stomach flop and his grin double in size that Gabriel would try to make him a giant cookie just because he liked them so much. And that was the real reason he knew Gabe kept trying to bake for him, because the man knew how much it meant to Sam no matter how bad the results were.
“Looks good” Sam giggled over his shoulder, arms wrapping around and holding the smaller man close.
“Shut it boyo, you can quit teasing or you’ll be on the couch so fast...” Gabriel grumbled, but Sam knew there was not real heat behind the threat, he could feel Gabe melting back against him once he’d put the try down on top of the stove. “Love you” Gabriel whispered softly, arms coming up to press along Sam’s where they were wrapped around the smaller man.
“Love you too” Sam murmured back, kissing the side of Gabriel’s neck gently.
“Wanted this to be special” Gabriel said so softly Sam had to struggle to hear, and his lover sounded so dejected it made Sam ache.
“Wanted what to be special baby, it is special that you tried to bake me a cookie, even if you failed...” he teased trying to lighten the mood and show Gabe how much he didn’t care he’d burnt the present he’d tried to make him.
Gabriel just shrugged and hung his head, clearly something more was wrong than Sam could grasp.
“Gabe?” he urged softly “what’s wrong baby?”
“It said something... the cookie” he replied poking out an arm and pushing the cookie angrily, like it had just ruined his whole world.
“Ok, so why don’t you just tell me what it said then?” Sam replied kindly, holding Gabriel closer to him.
“Was a question” mutter Gabriel still looking down at the ground but turning in Sam’s arms so they were pressed chest to chest, Gabe’s hands falling to rest on firm muscle, fingers curling in Sam’s button down.
Sam breathed in deep, not sure if this could possibly be headed where he thought... hoped... it might be. There really weren’t too many questions they had left to ask each other. They knew they loved each other more than breathing, they had long ago done the whole ‘wanna move in together’ thing...
“So ask me” Sam whispered, fingers of one hand finding Gabe’s chin and lifting it softly so he could look into the most beautiful eye’s he’d ever known. “What did the cookie say Gabriel?”
“I... it,” Gabriel stuttered and then seemed to shake himself out of it and smiled softly at Sam.
“Sam, will you marry me?” he asked softly and gave Sam a smile that said more than words ever could. “That’s... that’s what it said, the cookie”
Sam’s breath hitched and his smiled so wide it hurt his jaw, dimples deep just like Gabriel loved them. “God yes” he breathed happily as he leaned down and kissed the only person he’d ever loved like this, the only person he would ever love like this. “Yes” he said again a little louder, excitement lacing his voice.
