Bike theft can be problematic. It's not the fact that they can take the bike, but the future rideability is obviously compromised because of the lock. Stealing bikes is pretty common, especially if your bike doesn't have a lock, but it's also very frowned-upon.

But they don't lock it TO an object, they just lock the wheels so that they don't turn. It could be sitting in the middle of a park locked or something, but it's not locked TO anything. Hence why someone could just pick it up and walk away.
