I recently saw the episode of Good Eats where Alton Brown tackles his own homemade protein/energy bar (
Power Trip, first aired in 2005). Serpico and I, both watching at our respective houses, texted each other immediately: "WE HAVE TO MAKE THESE!" (meaning
the protein bars, we're dorks). Anyways, I anticipated not being able to find most of the ingredients in the regular grocery store so I hit Trader Joe's first last night, getting some things (the most important thing,
soy protein powder, and then Whole Foods today for the rest.
OK pause here. Dudes. I found the best thing ever at Whole Foods. (Please stop reading here if you have a high opinion of me and you don't want that to change). They have this
bulk area. It's like a bulk wall.
Bulk Heaven. You can buy any of their loose grains, nuts, beans, granola, dried fruit, etc. in ANY quantity you want. Which is great for a lady like me who needed only a half a cup of wheat germ, 1 cup of whole wheat flour, and couldn't resist the organic raisins but didn't want to buy a whole ($6) box of them. Oh, and it's all fairly priced (read: cheap for Whole Foods). I am so in love with this idea, those people are doing everything right.
So with my virtually all organic ingredients I went to work on
the protein bars just now. They were so easy! A time consuming thing to make but totally worth it. And they are GOOD! They don't taste all grainy and fake or overly sugared like the protein bars I'm used to.
I'm just happy to be able to have access to ingredients to make John and I delicious, healthy, and organic food. I'd love for my budget to allow me to eat like this all the time.
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is teaching me so much about consciously living as close to the earth as possible. OK I'm going on a tangent but seriously, this all makes me very happy :)
