It's a big scary thing to think about pulling back from social media -- we've been so conditioned to think of it as a lifeline, an essential point of contact with our industry and our friends. But there's always e-mail if people want to get hold of us. There's always the occasional blog post, when we have something we genuinely WANT to write about (as opposed to feeling obliged to post a certain number of times a week to keep our followers from forgetting us).

As of yesterday, I've set up StayFocusd (a great little Chrome extension -- I highly recommend it) on both my laptop and my main computer to lock me out of Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr from 7 am until 5 pm every day. I'm going to concentrate on doing exercises to improve my craft as a writer, setting some meaningful goals, refilling my long-depleted creative well with good books and other inspiring stuff, and taking care of all the things that I "didn't have time for" when I was busy scrolling through Tumblr and Twitter for hours every day. I'm really looking forward to it!

That's how I feel. And our kids are growing up hardly knowing anything else exists. And let's face it--there's a difference between useful tech and shallow tech. Going to have to check out StayFocusd--let me know how it goes.
