Chapter 7
“Rei-chan! Why are you crying?” Reika looked up, tears streamed down her plump cheeks. Her bottom lip quivered and she stubbornly turned away.
“Aw c’mon Rei-chan! I’m really sorry!” Reika refused to acknowledge Daiki and he crossed his arms.
“Don’t make me get Takaki-kun…” Reika snorted and held her nose in the air. Daiki slumped and Takaki came up behind him.
“Oi, Dai-chan. What’s up?” Daiki looked at Takaki then at Reika. Takaki blinked and then sighed, patting Daiki’s shoulder.
“You’ve much to learn kouhai.” Before Daiki could carry out his come back, Takaki had already proceeded to walking towards Reika.
“ReiRei!” Reika recognized Takaki’s voice and was determined not to look around.
“Fine, I guess you don’t want the candy I brought back for you.” Reika bit her lip. No, it was just a trick. She must not fall for it. Takaki folded his arms. His sister could be so stubborn sometimes.
“Well, if that’s how it’s gonna be, I’ll just split it between me and Daiki.” Takaki took a step back and then turned around.
“WAIT!” Takaki didn’t turn around but looked up at Daiki with a smirk.
“D-Did you say…candy?” Takaki slowly turned around and nodded.
“Hmm, you said you didn’t want any-“
“Since when did I say that?! I just didn’t answer you! I was just thinking it over.” Reika scoffed and walked towards her brother, looking up at him.
“Did you really bring back some candy?” Her eyes were still teary but there were no more traces of sadness lurking beneath her brown pupils. Takaki tried hard not to smile, but couldn’t help it.“Yes I did.” Reika smiled and Daiki sighed, and then patted Reika’s shoulder.
“Well then, let’s go eat!”
Takaki ran inside, slamming the door behind him. The rain poured outside, the splashes audible over the sound of the television. The television… That was odd. The television was on, but there was no one watching.
“Kaa-san?” No answer. He was just about to call for his father when he remembered that he was on a business trip. Then his eyes widened.
“ReiRei?” He called once. No answer. He looked around and noticed that Reika’s shoes were missing. Where could she have gone? Shoes still on, he went to the kitchen and grabbed the phone, clumsily dialing the number embedded into his brain. He tapped his fingers on to the counter.
“C’mon c’mon c’mon….” He mumbled.
“Moshi moshi?”
“Dai-chan!” Takaki stood up straight, shouting into the phone.
“Ow.” Daiki said pointedly.
“Sorry, look, is ReiRei with you?”
“No, I thought she was at home.” Takaki’s heart began to beat faster.
“Did she say she was going out? Did you talk to her? Have you seen her?”
“Well, she did call me earlier-“
“She did?! What time Dai-chan, what time?”
“I-I don’t know, around 7? Why, what’s wrong?” But Takaki wasn’t listening.
“7…I left at 7…she called you at 7…Daiki, what did she say?”
“I-I don’t know-“
“Daiki. What did she say?!”
“S-She asked me if I wanted to go and hang out but-“
“But? But what?” Daiki sighed.
“But I had already made plans just 5 minutes before she called.” Takaki’s heart dropped.
“Takaki? Takaki-kun? What happened?” Daiki asked quietly.
“She’s not home Daiki. She always waits for me. She always waits. She’s not here.” Takaki couldn’t speak. Why was he so worried? Reika could take care of herself…right?
When you’re gone, the pieces of my heart are missing you
Reika shivered and looked out the stores window. It was pouring and she didn’t bring an umbrella. No matter, the rain is what I live for. She sighed and looked at the time. 8:30. She thought about Daiki and Takaki. Who was she kidding? She knew she couldn’t be the only girl in their lives. Obviously Takaki had a group of girls, but Daiki…
“EW, Takaki-kun has a GIRLfriend!” Daiki mocked Takaki who held his head up high.
“Hmph! You’ll like girls one day Dai-chan.” Takaki just sat down, Daiki and Reika laughing loudly in the background.
“I’ll never like girls like that!” Daiki snorted with laughter and Reika beamed.
“Rei-chan!” Reika lifted her head to see Daiki and Takaki, completely drenched, anxious looks hovered over their faces. She was surprised at their sudden appearance and blinked.
“R-ReiRei? You okay?” Takaki asked taking a small step towards her. Then, previous events rushed back to her and she suddenly felt angry.
“What?” She said rather coldly, trying hard to remove all traces of emotion off of her face.
“ReiRei, daijobu?” Reika didn’t answer but glared at her brother. Takaki looked down at his feet, and stepped behind Daiki.
“Rei-chan…” Reika’s eyes shot towards Daiki. He noticed her expression soften for a second and then it was back to a cold stare.
“Yes?” She said pointedly.
“We were worried…we didn’t know where you were…”
“I have the right to go out if I want. Don’t I?” Daiki licked his lips and took a cautious step towards Reika who remained sitting down.
“W-Were you here the whole time?”
“Yeah.” She lied. Takaki let out a small sigh of relief which went unnoticed by Reika.
“Hai, let’s go home ReiRei.” Takaki inched closer towards Reika but Reika still didn’t get up.
“I’ll go home when I want.”
“But Rei-chan, it’s almost 9.” Reika just shrugged and sipped her drink. Daiki glanced up at Takaki who looked disgruntled.
“ReiRei, c’mon it’s late.” This fired Reika up.
“Late? Late? Takaki, I don’t wanna hear this from you. I’ve had enough and I don’t want to have to keep being abandoned. Do you even know how I’m feeling? Both of you. Do you know? Well, I’ll tell you, I’m done.” With that, Reika threw down some coins on to the table and walked out into the rain.
“Rei-chan! REI-CHAN!” Daiki shouted. He turned back to Takaki who stood stock still.
“Takaki, c’mon, she can’t walk on her own like this. Not in this weather-“
“Let her.” He said angrily. He left the little shop and strode off in another direction. Daiki stood underneath the stores canopy, mulling over who he should follow. After a full 1 minute, Daiki ran after Reika, calling her name.
I never thought I’d need you there when I cry…
“Rei-chan!” Daiki called after her retreating figure. She could hear him, but refused to turn around. She ran faster.
“Rei-chan! Please!” Daiki was too fast for her and caught up, hugging her tightly from behind.
“Rei-chan, why aren’t you listening to me? What did you mean? Please talk to me.” He pleaded. Then, he felt her shaking.
“D-Daiki, couldn’t you tell? Couldn’t you tell what I was feeling? Could you ever tell?” She said, frustrated. Her salty tears mixing with the cold raindrops.
“I-I’m sorry Rei-chan. I really am, but Takaki, he was really worried. Can you believe that at least?” Reika slowly turned around and Daiki loosened his grasp around her.
ldquo;H-He was?” She looked up at him and he remembered that that was the same face she made when she asked about the candy all those years ago.
“Yes, he was.” Then, Reika burst into tears and hugged Daiki. Daiki was taken aback but embraced her back, gently stroking her hair.
"But you shouldn't be telling me this." Reika loosened her arms and sighed.
"Dai-chan. He left again, but this time, it's my fault." Before Daiki could reply, Reika sneezed.
"C'mon. Let's get you inside." So Daiki wrapped his arm around Reika and walked the rest of the distance.
When you walk away, I count the steps that you take...
Takaki walked around the park to cool off. He let himself go in the rain, letting it drown out the sounds of Reika's voice, washing away the cold look in her eyes. Never had she told him off like that. But I deserved it... Then why was he feeling angry? He became confused and the rush of emotions he had went through burst, making him frustrated and mad. After a fourth round around the park, he decided to head home. The only way to set things right was to admit his faults. He was, afterall, the elder. As he was about to turn the corner leading to his house, he heard a bunch of voices.
"...that Reika girl is pissing me off." Takaki stopped walking. He didn't know why, but he hid around the corner, eavesdropping.
"Don't worry Ayumi. You'll get what you want soon. We just have to overcome this obstacle."
"You don't get it though! Keiko, the stupid girl clings to him."
"Well, didn't you listen to what I said? It's your own fault for not giving him the kiss."
"Not my fault your stupid bow kept sliding. If I had kissed him, it wouldve fallen then he wouldve seen the microphone."
"I told you we should've taped it to your--"
"Are you stupid?! I'm not taping it into my hair!" The two girls then crossed the road, and Takaki came out from his hiding spot. He was breathing heavily and he walked in a sort of daze towards his home. He finally reached the front steps and fumbled with his keys. Would he tell them? could he tell them? He quietly opened the door and before he could collect his thoughts, he felt someone squeezing him tightly.
"Wha--?"
"I'm sorry Takaki. I'm really really sorry. I shouldn't have-- you didn't deserve to-- oh, I'm just glad you're back!" Takaki looked down and saw Reika sobbing into his chest. He looked up and saw Daiki smiling.
"You're wearing my clothes you know." Were the first words he could think of. Daiki smirked at him and shrugged.
"I know." Reika pulled away from Takaki and closed the door.
"Oh c'mon, you owe him you know. Plus, he's junking with you tonight." Takaki sighed.
"Dai-chan, don't you have your own family?" But Daiki didn't answer. Instead, he was trying to roll up his sleeves.
"Jeez Takaki-kun. Your shirts are huge!" Takaki grinned.
"Or maybe you're just small." Daiki stuck his tongue out at him and gave up, the sleeves hanging loosely around his arms.
"Look ReiRei, I'm the one who should apologize." Reika looked at him with a sad smile.
"Takaki, I should've just told you from the start that..." Reika's sentence trailed off and she looked at Daiki. He gave a small nod and then went out of the room.
"Aniki." Takaki blinked. Reika had never called her that before. He swallowed and gazed at his younger sister.
"ReiRei, ReiRei, REIREI!" Takaki chanted while stampeding around the living room.
"Shut UP!" Reika pouted and sat down on the couch.
"Aw, it's a cute name ne?" Takaki grinned down at his sister and continued chanting.
"Fine, then I'm calling you Aniki." Takaki laughed and plopped down beside her.
"It's not a bad thing! Please Reika-chan? Can I please call you ReiRei? You know you like it, you always respond to it." When Reika didn't answer, he sighed and then patter her own the head.
"Fine. Reika-chan it is."
"N-No, it's okay. I-I guess I'm okay with...ReiRei. I wanna start calling you Aniki, but it feels weird!" Takaki poked Reika's cheek.
"Ne, it's up to you, but ARIGATOU REIREI!"
"Y-Yeah?" Takaki stammered.
"I was wrong to have lost my temper. I'm really sorry Aniki."
"But you had a right to--" Reika shushed Takaki and shook her head.
"No. I should've just told you how I felt a long time ago instead of bottling it up." Takaki leaned on the counter and looked at Reika.
"And how do you feel?" he asked quietly. Reika took a shaky breath.
"I feel lonely." She said simply.
"L-Lonely?" He repeated, aghast. Reika nodded.
"But you don't seem...you have me...Dai-chan..."
"Thats exactly it. I don't. Let's face it Takaki, you are barely home and Daiki probably has a girlfriend now. And I can't exactly keep you guys for myself." Daiki. The two girls. He couldn't say anything now. I'll just have to deal with it myself. He thought. Then he strode over to Reika and engulfed her in a tight hug.
"My turn" was all he said. Daiki peeked into the room and pouted.
"Why do I always miss out on these things?" Takaki laughed and slapped Daiki's shoulder.
"'Cause you don't live here, baka." Reika rolled her eyes and pulled Daiki.
"There's something called a group hug too you know."
"Yay!" Daiki exclaimed and Takaki scoffed.
"Kids these days..." Both Reika and Daiki hit him in the stomach and they all laughed. It seemed as if everything was alright. However, Takaki couldn't get the two girls off of his mind. As Daiki snored away on the little got beside him, he lay awake thinking about what he had heard. What did those girls want with Daiki? What does Reika have to do with it? I can't possibly tell them... He pondered and then drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
