Chapter Two
It was lunchtime and Reika felt her stomach grumble. Hmm, let's see what's in this bento box, ugh, I'm starving! Reika normally ate out for lunch with Chiyo or Kagame, but today, she just wanted to enjoy a simple homemade meal. Those are the best, plus, going out everyday is killing my wallet. Reika had opened up her bento and her eyes gleamed. There was some onigiri in the corner of the bento, right beside a small pool of soy sauce. Sushi came next, California Rolls and one with cucumber and tuna. Small orange fish eggs were sprinkled on them, brightening them up. On the far right side was Reika's favourite: Wasabi. Reika's mouth watered and she hurriedly grabbed her shopsticks and folded her hands in a prayer-like position, the chopsticks ledged between her thumbs and forefingers.
"Ittadakimasu!" Strange, it sounded like an echo, another voice had synced in with hers. She slowly turned around and saw Daiki digging into his own bento. It was almost identical to Reika's but in place of the wasabi was shrimp tempura. Daiki looked up after a few bites from his onigiri and looked up, his eyes locked with Reika's.
"ITTADAKIMASU!" They chanted before attacking each of their bentos.
"Mmm, oishi!" Daiki savoured the california roll and rubbed his small tummy. Reika took a bite of her onigiri and did the same.
"Hmm, Takaki really doesn't know what he's missing!" Reika grinned.
"Sou desu ne? I would think that Primary School was more interesting then here!" Daiki said thoughtfully. Reika rolled her eyes and began devouring the rest of her bento. Daiki watched, half amused and half disgusted.
"Ne, you should take your time eating! Taste your food, don't just swallow it whole. Now I'll bet you want more?" Daiki waved his chopsticks, with fried egg at the end, at her. She flinched at the flying egg bits and gave a small smile.
"Now that you mention it, your onigiri looks really good..." Daiki rolled his eyes and pushed his bento forward.
"Um, you look like you could eat more." Daiki pushed his bento towards Reika, who made her disappear, in a weak attempt to occupy her mind with something else. Daiki's kind gesture made her wince, as if the memory was a fresh cut wound, that he had penetrated with seven words.
"A-Ano, won't you be hungry?" Daiki grinned mischeviously.
"I never said you could have everything!" Reika laughed.
"Well, if you insist..." Reika picked up a california roll with her chopsticks and popped it into her mouth. It was delicious. Daiki grinned again.
"Like it? He asked, unable to stop the eagerness leak through his voice.
"Un!" She gave him a thumbs up and he beamed. He still looks like a kid! Kawaii...Oh, I cannot believe I just thought that...
"BAKA!" Reika thought out loud. Daiki's face fell and his lower lip jutted out into a small pout.
"I-I didn't say anything..." Daiki said in a small voice. It took Reika a full minute to figure out that she had spoken her thoughts aloud.
"Oh! Ah, no no no no! NOT you! Me, uh, erm...ano, I, uh..." She blubbered. Daiki looked confused but a little relieved all the same.
"Right..." Daiki grinned and Reika blushed.
"Kawaii! Just like back then!" Reika blushed an ever deeper shade of red.
"Reika-chan! Come out biji!"
"C-oming!" Reika raced down the hall and appeared at the top of the steps. She was just about to take a step down when she saw a whole mass of grown-ups. Takaki appeared behind her and sighed.
Come ON ReiRei! It'll be over in a few seconds, we can go over to Dai-chan's later." At the sound of Daiki's name, Reika took a deep breath and went down the stairs. Takaki followed closely behind laying a hand on her shoulder, appearing as a kind older brother, but they both knew that it was to keep Reika from running away.
"KAWAII!"
"SUGOII! She looks just like you Kaoru-san!"
"Biji!" Reika blushed deeply. She was never good with compliments. All she could do was blush crimson and continue walkng. At last, she had gone through all of the grown-ups, Takaki and Reika raced out the front doors, giving a short goodbye to their mother and ran down the street to Daiki's house.
"Uwa, Rei-chan! You're so...red!" Reika sighed and let herself in.
"She was smothered by grown-ups. I can't believe they actualy think she's CUTE!" He gasped dramatically and Reika punched him in the shoulder. Daiki shrugged.
"Well, she kinda is." Takaki looked like he was going to faint and Reika resembled a tomato.
"Aw, don't remind me!" Reika mumbled.
"Yeah, well, grown-ups will be grown-ups. At least they don't do that to you anymore, they still do to me! And I'M 17! How does THAT work?!" He asked to no one in particular. Reika smiled and poked his cheek.
"AW, you still have your baby cheeks! KAWAII!" It was Daiki's turn to blush.
"Whatever Miss Dimples!"
"CHEEKY!"
"DIMPLY!" The two laughed together and spent the rest of lunch in the other's company.
