Chapter Three
"Don't forget, your english compositions are due on Wednesday and I need those permission forms back if you've coming to Hiroshima next week. Also, don't forget about the dance, it's in two weeks time, you'll want to get tickets ASAP!"
"Hai, sensei!"
RING RIIIIIIIING!
"Hai! Have a good weekend everyone! Ja ne!" The teacher gathered her things and left. Everyone else began to pack up their things and file out one by one. That was when a small shriek erupted from the doorway.
"A-Ano, what brings y-you here Takaki-kun?" One of the girls asked. Reika heard and looked up. Daiki did the same.
"Uh, to talk to my baby sister?" He said dumbly. Reika rolled her eyes as the girls shrieked yet again. Takaki covered his ears and maneouvered his way towards Reika.
"What do you want from you baby sister?" Reika asked, making air quotes with her fingers as she said 'baby sister'. Takaki just poked her nose.
"Ne, tell kaa-san I'll probably be home by around 9:30." Reika sighed.
"Where are you going this time?" She asked wearily.
"I'm just going out with the guys, It's Friday night after all." Reika just looked at her feet.
"Whatever..." Takaki grinned and gave her a small hug.
"Arigatou ReiRei, ja! Bye Dai-chan!" He gave a small wave before walking out the door.Reika's head was still bent, her curls covered her face. Daiki slowly walked towards her and carefully placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. He felt her flinch but she didn't pull away.
"Daijobu?" He asked softly. Reika just shrugged and kept her head down. Daiki sighed and gently turned Reika around to face him.
"Aw, c'mon Rei-chan..." Daiki put a finger under her chin and lifter her head up.
"I'll only be gone for a few hours. Don't worry ReiRei..." Reika felt her eyes burn with tears and she turned around, unaware of Daiki standing closeby. She bent her head and Takaki spoke to her back.
"Please ReiRei, it's only for a little bit." Reika felt Takaki's hand on her back but she didn't react. She stood as still as a statue and let Takaki ramble on and on. That was another thing that separated them as brother and sister. Reika was unbelievably stubborn and Takaki just wasn't the committing type of person, so he gave in easily. Soon, Takaki had given up and gave Reika's shoulder a ight squeeze before turning to go. He then turned to Daiki and whispered.
"Dai-chan, please stay with her." Daiki looked at him with his round eyes. They looked concerned and Takaki couldn't look straight into them. It hurt him too much, knowing that it was he who should be staying with Reika.
"Hai. But promise me that you will come home at the time you say." Daiki said this seriously which made Takaki gulp.
"H-Hai. I promise." Then there was a loud shout.
"OI! TAKAKI-KUN! WHAT'S THE DEAL?!" Takaki spun around and saw someone running down towards him. Daiki had silently walked beside Reika and tried to get her to move, but she just stood there, stuck to the cement.
"Gomen Kei-kun. Just had to do something--" Takaki started but Kei gave him a look that silenced him instantly.
"Don't give me that, I know it's her fault." He jerked his head towards Reika's direction. This fired up Takaki at once.
"No, it wasn't. Just shut up, it was my own fault for being late." He said in a low voice, glaring at Kei. But Kei just shrugged and started picking at his nails.
"Whatever. But," He raised his voice so that it was carried over to where Daiki and Reika stood, "I would say she's causing too much problems. She just can't let you go. Doesn't she know that she's being annoying?" With that, Takaki just pushed Kei ahead and told him to shut up. He gave Reika's back a worried glance and saw that she was shaking. But, he just turned away and followed Kei.
"D-Dai-chan?" Daiki was surprised to hear Reika speak. Her voice croaked.
"Hai?" She kept her head lowered but he could still hear her muffled sobs. His heart ached for his best friend. He just wrapped his arms around her and let her cry into his chest.
"Dai-chan?" Reika said softly.
"Yeah?" Daiki looked into her eyes. He could see that she was remembering too and it hurt her.
"Remember that day?" Of course I remember that day, how couldn't I?
"Which day?" Reika swallowed and took Daiki's hand away from her chin and held on to them.
"The day Takaki..." She couldn't continue. Her chest swelled and she collapsed on to the floor.
"REIKA!" Daiki caught her before she made contact with the cold hard floor.
"I-I'm fine. I think..." Daiki knelt down beside her, caressing her in his arms.
"It's okay Rei-chan. I'm right here, just like before..." Reika nodded and cried quietly in his arms.
Takaki...
Takaki had strode out of Reika's classroom, trying his best not to remember. Deja vu... He walked as fast as he could to the school gates. His fists were crammed into his pockets. It hurt him quite a bit to act happy and oblivious in front of Reika. It probably hurt even more then the first time. But I've been doing it all the time... He was thinking. But then he remembered Daiki's face. Concern. He always made me feel bad...
"Oi! Takaki-kun..." He looked up and found that he was already at the school gates. He had been so absorbed in his own thoughts, he had subconscously made his way towards the front of the school.
"Yeah yeah, I'm coming..." He jogged the last few steps towards Kei who was leaning on the school's gates.
"What was taking you so long?" Takaki looked at the ground and kicked astone and slouched.
"Nothing." Kei folded his arms and rolled his eyes.
"Yeah right, you just told your sister again didn't you?" Takaki shrugged and tried to look non-chalant.
"Yeah, so?" He still looked at the ground.
"So, she's just becoming more troublesome." Here we go again... Takaki thought and looked up.
"What, it's my own fault that I'm late okay? Stop taking it out on Reika." He said sharply. Kei wasn't bothered by his tone and scratched his head.
"Yeah well, she's doing a better job keeping out of your way. I'll consider talking to her one day, she's pretty cute ne..." Takaki gave Kei such a look that he even took a step back holding his hands protectively in front of him.
"Just kidding man, jeez, let's just go..." Kei turned and started walking. Takaki paused before following. There was something in Kei's voice when he mentionned his sister. He couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was, but he knew he had to keep a close eye on Kei. Him and Reika both.
Daiki & Reika...
"Mmmm! Oishi!" Reika's eyes glowed when she tasted the ice cream. Daiki laughed.
"Your taste hasn't changed much has it?" Reika smiled and took another bite.
"COLD COLD!" She closed her mouth and clamped her eyes shut. She patted her cheeks, as if that would make the cold go away. It was such an odd sight that Daiki couldn't suppress his laughter.
"KAWAII!" He managed to get out through his fit of laughter. Reika had finally otten down the cold substance and was coughing a bit.
"Oh shut up!" She waved her spoon at Daiki who was hiccoughing.
"Yeah yeah. It was just funny." Reika rolled her eyes and took a smaller bite.
"Whatever man. Anyway..." She pulled back her sleeve and checked her watch.
"Hmm, I don't feel like going home yet." She looked out the window and Daiki stared at her. Now's my chance to make everything like before...
"Ne, I can take you somewhere if you'd like." He offered. She slowly looked away from the window and finished the reminants of her ice cream before answering.
"Sure. But if we don't get back home by 7, I reserve the right to say that you kidnapped me." She said in a serious tone, but there was a twinkle in her eyes. Daiki grinned.
"Yeah yeah yeah, I'll even let you handcuff me." Daiki smiled wiely and Reika smacked his arm.
"Let's just go!"
"Okay okay!" And they walked out of the store, arm in arm. Just like before.
Sunset...
"Wow."
"I know."
"I can't believe it looks...well, the same!" Reika marveled at the sight. The grass was trimmed short, but it was prefectly green, the warm colours of sunset glinted off of the metal playground. The yellow of the monkey bars glowed in the yellow of the sun, the swings swayed slightly in the light breeze. Somehow, it looked majestic. Reika let her hands feel the cool metal against her skin and she vaguely remembered three kids, two boys and one girl, playing and fooling around. She remembered jumping off the swing and soaring through the air, and as she landed, she scraped her knee and ripped her jeans. But the boys just laughed and she learned not to care much for the pain.
Reika closed her eyes and remembered everything. This place was majestic. She felt Daiki come closer and placed his arm around her shoulders.
"Just like old times ne?" Reika couldn't help but to smile. She opened her eyes and leaned on Daiki's shoulder.
"Hai, just like old times." That was when another change began to happen. The same place those three kids had made their promise.
"Promise we'll be friends forever!" Daiki exclaimed, his small fist in the air.
"Yay! We should do a spit shake!" Takaki suggested.
"Ew! That's disgusting. Baka!" Reika punched Takaki in the shoulder and Takaki sighed.
"Just an idea..." Daiki shook his head.
"Doesn't matter, as loing as we promise right?" Brother and sister looked at Daiki and all three of them grinned.
And now all we need is Takaki. We need him back.
