Chapter Six

A week passed and it seemed that all ws going well for Daiki, Reika, and Takaki. Each time after school, Takaki would sneak into Daiki and Reika's classroom. He tried going in casually one day, but a swarm of girls swallowed him whole in their flirtations. He had only barely escaped, having run to the front of the school and hiding behind a tee while the girls follwed but couldn't find him. Daiki and Reika were watching and oth were beside themselves with laughter. It was much more blissful between the three of them. However, there was still one small glitch in their renewed friendship.
"Where are you going now?" Reika asked warily as she spotted Takaki bent over his shoelaces. Takaki didn't look up but continued with the tying of his laces and then he stood up and placed a hand on the doorknob.
"Takaki--"
"Don't worry, I'll be fine." He snapped. Reika gasped at his sudden frostiness. Then she collected herself and looked at his face, studying his expression. His grip had tightened around the doorknob, with a strong determination. I don't want to look into her eyes. It hurts still...
"I'll be waiting then." Reika said softly. Takaki grinded his teeth and then swung the door open and stepped outside. Reika blinked when he had slammed the door shut.
"Ja." She whispered. Reika watched her brother's tall figure through the window and watched, through the sudden wetness in her eyes, her brother slowly become a little black dot.

Daiki sat at his table slumped over his English work. The clock's ticks and tocks played with his brain, as if time had just gotten slower, or had stopped all together. He stared blankly at the foreign shapes and punctuations in his notebook, not knowing what to get out of them. He sighed and just slouched a little more over the work, the silence ringing in his ears.
RING RING!
He had almost fallen off of his chair because he had jumped violently at the high pitched sound. He grabbed the phone and punched the talk button.
"Moshi moshi?" He croaked. That's what you get for not using your vocal chords for an hour straight.
"Um, is this Daiki-kun?" A girl's voice asked a little uncertainly. He cleared his throat before responding.
"Yeah, who is this?" He asked politely, but curiosity took over his mind.
"Ayumi Kizuya desu. I sit behind you in class." Daiki mulled it over in his brain and could only remember a vague face, but nonetheless, he knew who she was, in a sense.
"Oh! Ayumi-chan, what's up?" Daiki asked non-chalantly. It took a while before Ayumi had answered. He heard whispers in the background, but disregarded them.
"Ano, nothing much really. I was just wondering...Eto, are you doing anything tonight?" Daiki shook his head and remembered that she couldn't see her.
"Ah! I mean, no nothing. Why?" He asked in spite of himself. There went the mysterious whispers again.
"Oh, well I was just thinking. Um, I wondered if you wanted to hang out or something?" Daiki's brain hadn't quite caught up to the conversation yet and he sat there, staring blankly at the phone.
"Ano, Daiki-kun?" She asked tentively.
"H-Hai! I mean, n-no! I mean, no, I'm not doing anything. That sounds great." The words came tumbling out of his mouth and there was nothing he could do to take them back now.
"Okay! I'll meet you at the park at 8! Ja!" Before Daiki could say anything, the line had already went dead and he there he sat, phone still in his hand. He scratched his head and spoke aloud.
"Did I just make a date?" Then he swivelled his chair to face his vanity mirror and his eyes widened.
"EEEH?! I HAVE A DATE?" Daiki sprung up from his chair and started rummaging through his closet for suitable clothing and threw each of his shirts one by one on to his bed.
RING RING!
Daiki snapped his head towards his bed.
"Oh crap..." He dug through the pile of clothes on his bed until he found the phone.
"Moshi moshi?" He asked breathlessly.
"Dai-chan? You okay? You sound like you just ran a whole lap around the track." Daiki slowed his breathing before responding.
"No, I'm fine. What's up Rei-chan?" He asked, glancing at the time every now and then. 7:00. He only had an hour.
"Nothing, I was just wondering if you were free..." Reika's change in tone surprised Daiki but he didn't pay attention to it. All he could think about was his upcoming date. He wasn't exactly a multitasker.
"Ah, gomen. I'm going out tonight."
"O-Oh. Really? Okay, I was just thinking--"
"Hontou ni gomen Reika, but I really have to go!" He said urgently. It was already 7:15.
"Ah. Okay. Ja." For the second time, the line went dead before Daiki could respond, but this time he hung up the phone and jumped into the shower.

"Moshi moshi?"
"Ano, is Dai-chan home?" Daiki's mother sighed.
"No, he's over at the park right now, on a play date." Takaki gripped the phone, not looking at Reika.
"Ah, hai. Sankyuu." He hung up and let out a slow breath. Reika smiled.
"Well?" Takaki shook his head and her smile faltered. That's when their clock chimed noon and Takaki's head sprang up.
"Ah, I've gotta get going ReiRei. Ja." He patted her head as he slipped his shoes and and opened the door. Reika sat on the couch, curled up into a ball, crying to herself.

Reika's eyes felt puffy and she sniffled a little. It hurt, just as much as it did before, only this time, it seemed Takaki had abandonned her and Daiki became impatient with her. She blew her nose into the tissue and sighed deeply. Maybe it wasn't working out as well as she'd thought, maybe it was all just an illusion. An illusion I wish were true.

At the park...
"Daiki-kun! Over here!" Daiki turned around and saw Ayumi waving at him, a light smile on her face. She wore a skirt with black flats, her hair tied up in a ponytail, a small bow perched atop of her head. Her smile widened as he reached her and he smiled shyly.
"So, where do you wanna go?" He asked her. She fiddled with her bow a little before answering.
"Oh, um, why don't we go to that new sushi bar just around the corner? I hear that the food's delicious!" She prompted, a small twinkle in her eye. Daiki shrugged.
"That's cool." Ayumi smiled and began walking. Daiki followed, keeping in step with her.
"Soo..." Daiki started, but found he had nothing to say. Ayumi cleared her throat and she played with a lock of her hair.
"Um, I hear you're close to Reika-chan." Daiki nodded.
"Hai. She's a childhood friend." Ayumi opened her mouth to say something, and then skapped the bow on her head. Daiki looked at her curiously.
"You okay?" She smiled furtively and laughed.
"Yeah, I'm fine. So, you guys must've been paired up as sweethearts then?" Daiki laughed at this and Ayumi gave him a questioning look.
"Ah, lie! We're just really close friends, that's all." Something tugged at his stomach, but he didn't pay attention to it. Ayumi's expression lightened and he found themselves talking non-stop. She was surprisngly really easy to talk to, almost as easy as talking to Reika. Before he knew it, they had finished their meal and it was getting dark out.
"Ne, do you want me to walk you home?" Daiki offered. Ayumi smiled and was about to nod, and then shook her head, her hands playing with the bow.
"It's okay! I can find my way from here. Thanks, I had a great time." She flashed him a smile and he returned it. Ayumi stepped closer and tiptoed to give him a kiss on the cheek. She then turned around and went off in the opposite direction, leaving Daiki alone to mull over his thoughts.

Now you see me, now you don't...
Reika had been strolling around to take her mind off of things. She had made a few laps around the neighborhood, stopping by an old family friend's house on the way. Then she found herself at the park, and it was nearly getting dark. Then she heard voices, fast approaching her direction. She didn't really want to be seen, so she got up from the swings and then she heard the voices nearing. She recognized one of them.
"Do you want me to walk you home?" Reika's face flushed. She couldn't see the other person's face, but she knew that it was a girl. Reika stood still, rooted to the spot. She heard the girl refuse and then snuck a peek. She saw the girl give Daiki a peck on the cheek and turned around and walked away. She took a step back and saw Daiki touch the place where the girl kissed him and then she turned and ran.
