myopia of the masses - a poem

Myopia of the Masses.

Your nail broke?
horror.
Your boyfriend didn’t kiss you this morning?
what a jerk.
Your parents grounded you because you had a 200$ phone bill?
they’re out to ruin my life.
Your friends weren’t as supportive as you would have liked?
no one cares about me.
A girl wore the same shirt as you today?
my life is over.
Your best friend didn’t say anything about your new haircut?
she’s just jealous.
Your teacher gave you a D on your creative writing?
i'm so misunderstood.
You had to do chores before going to the mall?
this is child labour.

People are dying all over the world because they don’t have food, shelter, money or basic amenities?
it’s not happening to me, i can look the other way.
An orphan wanders the slum, selling her body for money to buy that nights’ supper?
it’s not happening to me, i can look the other way.
A homeless man relies on the pocket change of people on the street to live?
it’s not happening to me, i can look the other way.

A boy in your English class comes to school with bruises on his face and arms every day?
it’s not happening to me. i can look the other way.
