A new Paperwhite is being released at the end of September.  Amazon is touting better display technology, a new built in light, faster processor, a new way to flip pages and scan chapters, better dictionary lookup, and Goodreads (but not Shelfari?) integration ( Read more... )

Nope. I would not expect to see page turn buttons on any future touch screen model -- they just don't seem to be going in that direction.

That really upsets me. That's the only reason I keep buying the older models. I wish they would reconsider. I can't believe it would be THAT difficult to add them!!

I guess it just seems superfluous and out of line with their continual quest to make things simpler. Sometimes simpler means fewer options.

Have you tried a touch screen Kindle? I never thought I would like it, but I jumped from the K3 to the Paperwhite very easily. The way the screen is "zoned" I very rarely mistouch and go the wrong direction, or touch the screen in error. For me, the light was well worth adjusting to the touch screen.

Melina, admittedly I haven't been following the Kindle news for a while but... when did Amazon discontinue the Kindle Keyboard?

Call me old-fashioned, but I really love my Keyboard 3G. *weeps*

I don't know the date, but IIRC it was around the time of the Paperwhite's release.

I really loved the Keyboard too (mine is still in my closet, ready as a so-far unneeded backup), but I like the Paperwhite better. The light is really a killer feature for me, and I adapted to the touch screen much easier than I thought.

The other thing that was a possible issue for me was the reduction in space -- from 4 gigs down to 2, with about 1 gig free for storage. It turns out it hasn't been an issue at all. I keep unread books on my device along with fanfic and some favorites, which is all I really need. In addition to the Amazon cloud, my Calibre libraries live in my Dropbox, which I can access from any computer or from the Paperwhite's web browser, giving me access to all my non-Amazon stuff without keeping it all stored on the device.

Any news about a Kindle Fire upgrade? They've been running specials (even an 'As Seen on TV' offer), which leads me to think they must be getting ready to put out a new version. My first-gen Fire seems to be getting glitchy, but I don't want to get another one now if something "better" is coming down the pike soon.

I have seen some rumors but nothing concrete so far.

I think that's what made me wonder! I will hold out some hope that it'll come out before my first-gen quits on me. Planned obsolescence? Hmmmmm. ;)

I don't know about you guys, but some of the books I want most as ebooks aren't available for any price.

I know! I have resorted to scanning some of my favorite books just to have e-files of them.

The matchbook intrigues me, too. I have many more books I'd love to get an e-copy of.

Some people on Mobileread have reported good results with 1DollarScan, but I haven't tried them yet.
