Hey all, I recently published an eBook with color images in it (see my page if interested), and I have a couple of questions for eBook readers
( Read more... )
1.) it makes sense to orient the map sideways. It's mor comfortable to read. For me, maps doesn't matter because I have such a bad orientation I don't read maps. I just take the words I read in the book for real and trust them to find the right way without me checking it :-)
2. I love my paperwhite. Before that I used the old Kindle Keyboard and am used to read without colour. And I have to say, I don't miss it. I read a lot but I can't remember a book with pictures in it, besides the cover. The paperwhite is perfect for reading and nothing else. Compared to the Kindle Keyboard there isn't even the possibility to hear music with it. (Another feature I don't miss).
What e-book reader do you use? Does it have colour and why do you need it? (Just curious, because I can't remember any of my ebooks with pictures in it).
Well, I was trying to make my book as similar as possible to a print version, and lots of books have maps (and a few people who get something out of maps wanted them). Obviously the text is most important, but people like the flair that maps add, especially if well done. :) Also people loved my book cover, and that is in color too.
I got a tablet mainly to be able to view my own work, but have started getting other eBooks too. One of them I'm reading also has maps. I got my tablet right after Thanksgiving, and it is a somewhat generic 7" Android tablet with the Kindle app, and since I got it on eBay for $41.39 with no shipping or taxes, it was cheaper than the basic Kindle or Nook at the time, even though those were massively on sale. My Nexus 5 phone is nice for reading too though.
I've always preferred color if there was such an option though. Even in science textbooks.
I loved e-ink with my original Kindle and I love paperwhite. Both are easy on my eyes and reduce eye strain. I think color would increase eye strain.
I do have books with pictures of examples that are important for me to see and I have to view those on my Kindle app on my lap top to see them correctly.
the orientation of maps is not important, because if the printed edition is also oriented towards the sides maps there is no problem, it would be the same. For my part, the maps in colors are not a priority.
I'm used to reading without color. In most books I've read over the decades, it's just the cover that is in color, and in most cases the difference just doesn't matter to me. The same with maps. I think maps are easier to read if they are oriented sideways, so there's more room for them. I don't really like the distraction of illustrations, even in fan fic.
