Alternatively, if you get the Send to Kindle extension and send the AO3 story with that, it'll send correctly, too. I had three stories do the error thing this week and I just sent through the Send to Kindle browser extension instead and it was fine.
I believe there's something going on with AO3 on some stories at the moment, so until it's cleared up we have to find ways around it :)
Yeah, I tried using the Send to Kindle app on my MacBook. It didn't convert it/send it correctly, unfortunately.
But I tried the 'convert via Calibre' trick mentioned above, and it works now, so I guess that'll have to be my workaround until AO3 fixes itself. Hopefully soon!
This just started happening on some I downloaded last night. Glad it's not just me, hope it gets sorted out soon. In the meantime, nice to know there's a way round it, thanks the good folk of this community! :)
hi guys! this issue has been stressing me for days! but at least i know that AO3 is working on it and that the problem isn't just me. (it seems to be a font compatibility issue? but anyways...) It's mentioned first on AO3's "Known Issues" page:
*Current Issues* Errors when trying to open .mobi files: we are having consistent issues with .mobi files not opening correctly on Kindle devices. We are investigating the underlying issue, but have yet to find the cause. In the meantime, our best suggestion is to download the .epub file to a desktop and use Calibre to convert the work to .mobi.

...Stupid question, is there any way to get Calibre to not add such a big margin on the left side of the page when it converts? Or is this just me?

Touch the icon (three horizontal bars) in the upper right corner. From the dropdown list, choose Settings. In the resulting dropdown, choose Restart.
Can't hurt, might help.
BTW, I use Send to Kindle and love it. This links to the PC version of the program, but there's also a Mac version.

I ended up getting it to work by using Calibre to convert the mobi into another mobi... so silly :O
