[40: action/video] clear the wreckage from the blast

Jul 05, 2011 00:34

[If you guessed that Jack's response to being uncomfortable with a given situation was to head to the beach, you guessed right! He'd come out originally to watch the fireworks going off near the hills, and the colors were awfully pretty. Even the sounds weren't so bad, at first. But over time, with darkness pressing in, the whistles and bangs ( Read more... )

it's hard and nobody understands, not super interesting, more lightning than expected, the sea, not a big talker, just straight up don't say anything, let us smoke, i don't see any ocean, jumpy rapturian chain-smokers' club

Watching the fireworks from a distance is about Mark's speed, and the beach is a longstanding habit. So, as coincidence would have it, here he is, walking the shoreline in his shirtsleeves.
He sees the glow of Jack's cigarette first, recognizes who it is a moment later. Still some distance away, he raises a hand.

"Jack!"

Well, hey, he was right about other people. This evening is getting better already. He waves back.

"Hi, Mark!"

That seems like a decent enough invitation. He heads Jack-wards.

"Hey," he says, when he gets a little closer. "Celebrating?" He's noticed the beer bottle.

"Sort of. I don't know if anyone did this last year. I've never seen it at home. I guess it's about America."

[Elaine didn't see him because of the video. She had been circling the relative area where the fireworks were going off, because she liked seeing them from the air, when she caught sight of someone smoking cigarettes at the beach.]

[She edges closer, careful not to be heard. When she finally makes out who it is, she drops down behind him gently.]

Hi!

[He jumps a little, but grins once he recognizes the voice.]

Hey, Elaine. It's quieter over here.

A little bit. [She watches the glow of the fireworks for a moment.] I didn't think you'd find it noisy, actually.

It was pretty loud. I kept thinking something would come at me. But it still looks nice from here.

She needed to get away from it. The sounds, the lights (why did it have to be red to start with?), all of it carried back memories and opened wounds had already been torn raw from the Chess match. From seeing him. From finding herself powerless against him and yet still surviving, just like last time. Why hadn't he hunted her down? He could have, she knew it. She couldn't have actually outrun him in that state. So why hadn't he killed her? It would have been easy, she knew. Just a single swing of his sword, one well aimed slash, and her head would have been at his feet. Was it because he thought she was the same as him? Was that why he'd held up his end of the deal, when she had been so helpless compared to him? Or was it because he knew there was nothing she could do, that he had already won and giving her the package would just rub in all the damage she'd done to get him his crowns ( ... )

From here, the fireworks look small, manageable starbursts, at least to Jack. The wavering surface of the ocean shatters their reflections into unrecognizable chunks of color.

He's had a few visitors already, so he doesn't even flinch this time, just raises an empty hand in a wave.

"It's you."

All anyone's gotten is a 'hi' thus far, but they know him and his taciturn habits. Perhaps he should say something else, since she's new. He takes his time thinking about it, humming tonelessly--a sound drowned in the surf--and drawing a slow spiral in the sand with his index finger.

Finally, he adds, "Come sit?"

She nods at his greeting, still tense and a little distant. The quiet helped her stay calm now that she had regained her grasp of the present moment, but it's impossible to tell if her shaking as she sits next to him is from nerves or her injuries.

"Hello." Is all she says as she bends her legs and wraps her arms around them.
