What would you recommend as an introductory book for a 50ish geek who's been away from science fiction for a while. He's particularly interested in Steampunk.

If his tastes run to hard science fiction, I'd say "The Difference Engine" is a good choice; if he likes more fantasy kinda stuff, there's always Girl Genius...

I'm not sure there is such a thing, though if you find one please do let me know. I've been hanging around the fringes of steampunk for a while, mostly as a neo-victorian who dresses like it's 1889 and goes to the dances. It's good to know about the game Space 1889 and have some passing acquaintance with Abney Park's music. I just typed "steampunk" into Amazon's search bar and got a reasonable assortment of possibilities. Maybe you could read the reviews and try one.

For what I understand, steampunk is a genre with precious few actually published entries.

My introduction to Steampunk was Phillip Pullman's "The Golden Compass" but I figured that was a bit too fantasy and girl oriented for my boss.

Ah, another Space: 1889 player! It was steampunk before steampunk was cool. :-)

Seconds The Difference Engine. Also pretty much anything by Jules Verne.
