Having stayed out all night and visited Tony in the hospital early in the morning to go home, Ianto realised that he was only supposed to be in the Library or half a day, and couldn't really stay without rousing suspicion.
He couldn't get the data he needed for the creatures he was researching, as they were nocturnal.
So he slunk home, hoping to sneak in unnoticed to get a change of clothes and perhaps a nap.
He did try napping, in one of the spare rooms, but nightmares soon put an end to that so he gave up and got up, sneaking to the kitchen to quickly put the coffee machine back together - really, it wasn't the rest of the house's fault if Owen was a bastard - as he ignored the hot chocolate on the table, before wondering what to do to waste hours before he could go back Underground.
He was still angry at Jack, and he couldn't tell Kyle, but Gwen? He could talk to her.
