I presume that you've read the sequel. it begins with the sentence* "Never let Hollywood make a movie of your life."

Winston Groom was...shall we say...unhappy with the film.

I actually stayed away from the sequel; I think I read the preface in a bookstore and wasn't interested in the rest.
