By now, I imagine everybody has seen Miss South Carolina pontificate on geographical ignorance; if you have not, I reproduce the video and transcript below for your convenience.
I don't think she even understood what the question was--if you look at the words as if they *were* sentences, she's actually talking about helping out less fortunate countries, such as Iraq and South Africa. But, I don't really like public speaking either, and I could see just hearing a few words of the question and trying your best to answer the question you think you heard.
But I also agree that she certainly was *not* being judged on her brains, or even particularly her beauty (they are all conventionally beautiful if they are in this competition), but on her poise. And she did keep that throughout her nervous little speech.
