#13. Terri Schiavo, 43
Wow, this is so tasteless of us. So wrong. So very wrong. Good thing we're just kidding. We just had to honor Terry Schiavo on the one year anniversary of her death. May she rest in peace.
But really, we are smack dab in the middle of
Deaf History Month (March 13-April 15). Even though technically Terri Schiavo was deaf also, the real honoree today is Marlee Matlin, 40.
Like Schiavo, Matlin is also the child of a lesser God. Hey we're not making any political statements, just making a reference to her 1986 Oscar-winning performance. Two years ago, two of our best friends made us watch that movie, since they had to do so for an American Sign Language class. While we were watching, we were magically cured of insomnia half way through. However, we did resist the soporific effects long enough to notice the striking beauty of Marlee Matlin and her stunning debut performance. The
wonders of You-tube have made it possible to watch William Hurt, her co-star and the previous year's Oscar winner for Best Leading Actor in Kiss of the Spiderwoman, present her with the trophy. If you opt not to watch the video, at least take a gander at the picture below where she is one purple wig away from Dame Edna.
We jest, we jest. Marlee cleaned up very nicely in subsequent years, gave one of the most riveting guest starring roles on Law and Order: SVU, and convinced us forever that it is not wrong to find a deaf girl hot. Seriously, no one ever equates deaf girls with hotness! We are trying to change that, one countdown at a time. Don't ever say we didn't care.
