He did not even bother to pretend that he was looking for a good looking cabbage like his best friend demanded because right in front of him was something - someone - way more good looking than a vegetable.
this has been sitting in my fics folder for the longest time and idk why i’m doing something about this just now. i've written, rewritten, edited and did all sorts of things with this a dozen of times already just to make it into a oneshot. but, well, i like chaptered things so-
“I’m gay.”
“What - no Junsu, that can’t be.”
“But I am. I realised I was when they gave me the Sorry Girls, I’m Gay shirt as a present.” That was a year ago, Nana wanted to scream. She almost banged her head on the table because really, really, this cannot be happening to her. “I shouldn’t have lead you on, I’m sorry.”
Blinking back her tears, she shook her head and stood up, suddenly determined to run away. “It’s fine. I - I’ll be going now.”
“Do you want to meet my boyfriend?”
The question made her sit back down. She might have heard it wrong but she can’t be too sure. “Excuse me, what?”
Junsu grinned. The nerve, she thought bitterly. “My boyfriend, he’s waiting outside. I’m sure he’d be pleased to meet you. He - he actually convinced me to tell you the truth because he didn’t want you to get your hopes high.” Too late was what she would have said if she wasn’t busy gaping at him like he was a madman. “He didn’t want me to use you as a cover for work anymore so…”
Nana smiled, albeit forced. "I'm sure your boyfriend is lovely, Junsu." she said. "But there is absolutely no need for me to meet him. I'll see you at work. Or never. Whatever. Ciao!"
She made it out of the restaurant in record time, pointedly ignoring Junsu who was calling out her name. Well, great, now the whole restaurant knew her identity and how miserable her life was.
Yunho felt bad. Nana had never been lucky when it came to romance. His best friend, it seemed, had a knack for getting attracted to all the gay men in South Korea. Aside from that, he could not fathom how no straight guy seemed to be ever attracted to her. She was pretty, sexy, and had a decent job that paid well. Also, she was not whiny unlike most girls nowadays. So what was it that was wrong with her?
"Is it because my boobs aren't big enough?" He did not even bat an eyelid as she grabbed her breasts and squeezed them right in front of him. "Well screw them. I'm not getting a boob job."
"Right. Hmm, that's good to know." he replied. "I don't want my best friend sporting some humongous plastic boobs."
A whack on the head was all it took for him to react violently with a hiss. "This is not a laughing matter, Yunho! He's the seventh guy to admit he's gay. Is there really something wrong with me? Tell me!"
He sighed exasperatedly. They've had this conversation one too many times already and it was starting to get annoying considering how she was asking the same questions and he kept giving her the same answers which she never really noticed. Too broken-hearted and glum to do so.
"No, Jinah. You are perfect. Now stop crying."
Just for that, she wailed louder. "How can I? The person I like is in love with another guy!"
"It's a good thing you're not in love with him, right? Doesn't sting as much as when you're actually in love." he chastised, actually considering hitting her on the head. "Just move on. You managed to do so from six other guys. Why not him?"
"Because!" Nana cried out, flailing her arms pathetically. "Because he's Kim Junsu."
He quirked a brow. "Okay. Your point is?"
"My point is," she huffed. "I really like him."
Yunho hated it when he had to tell her off. She was kind of sensitive at the moment, but he had to or she would not stop crying over something so petty. He knew petty when he saw one. Kim Junsu's orientation had always been something he knew but didn't tell Nana because he did not want to ruin her silly crush on him. Perhaps it was because he was gay himself that he could sense things like that, but he met Kim Junsu plenty of times before and wasn't able to comprehend how Nana couldn't see it.
Besides, it was a crush. He didn't think it was serious so he did not find the need to inform her that the guy she was pining over had a picture of himself with another guy kissing in his wallet. He knew because he had seen Junsu's wallet before when he paid for their dinner. With Nana, of course.
"But he doesn't so just get over him."
"Yunho!"
"Look, if you're that desperate to have a boyfriend, I'm just going to have to help you."
She scoffed. "You can't exactly help me when you can't even help yourself."
In their seven years of friendship, Yunho managed to learn how to not feel insulted at Nana's words, specially when she - more often than not - referred to his non-existent love life. In his defense, it was not like he cannot get himself a boyfriend. He just didn't want one at the moment. He was perfectly fine being single.
There was something about Nana and groceries. Yunho would always get scolded for forgetting to stock up his fridge and will promptly be dragged to the supermarket unwillingly. Which was why, at seven in the evening, he was at the vegetable section of the supermarket. He did not even bother to pretend that he was looking for a good looking cabbage like Nana demanded because right in front of him was something way more good looking than a vegetable.
The man was postively gorgeous. A few inches shorter than him, sporting a short cropped hair with his bangs pinned up by some hair clip and perched on his nose was a black-rimmed glasses. Very anime-looking, Yunho thought, but better because he was real. So real that they could walk up to him, ask for his name and then maybe get his number. Suddenly excited at his new discovery, he nudged Nana who was busy weighing two cabbages in each hand and discreetly pointed at the man.
Nana glanced at the direction he was pointing to and said, "He's gay."
"And you know that because?"
"Because I'm attracted to him and we both know what that means."
"Don't assume."
"Well, don't either. You're assuming he's straight."
"Wimp." Yunho muttered then sauntered up to the man who looked pleasantly - his brain provided - surprised at his presence. If he were to be honest, he didn't know where the sudden bravery came from. His body simply took over him before his rational self came out. The man was looking at him expectantly and he figured it would look utterly stupid if he took a few steps back. "You looked like you needed company." he blurted out unintelligently.
The man eyed him for a while before shaking his head. "I didn't, though."
Behind him, Nana snickered. "Well," he spoke after clearing his throat to cover his embarrassment. "I'm telling you now, you would enjoy our company. This is my best friend, Im Jinah, by the way. But you can call her Nana."
"Okay, how about you?"
"Me?" Yunho blinked.
"Yeah? I mean how am I supposed to enjoy your company if I don't even know your name?"
Good point, Yunho thought to himself. "Yunho. My name is Jung Yunho." And you're supposed to enjoy Nana's company, not mine, he added silently.
"Great! And I'm Kim Jaejoong. It's nice to meet you, Yunho."
"He likes you."
Yunho spluttered, looking at Nana in disbelief. "Excuse me? He totally doesn't."
"Sure he does. Have you seen the way he looks at you? The truth is, he only gave me a glance but never bothered to pay attention to me."
He snorted. "Only because you barely said a word and I kept on blabbing so naturally, he'll pay more attention to me. And besides, I think he was blown away by your beauty so he wasn't able to stare at you."
"Right. Keep believing that." Honestly, she could go on forever telling him reasons why it's him Jaejoong was interested in, not her. But that was going to ruin the fun, so she opted to keep mum and let Yunho believe what he wanted to believe. He will realise his stupidity eventually anyway. Also, she was curious to know the silly things he would come up with.
"I will!"
He was getting impatient. It's been days and there was no development at all. Much to his chagrin, Nana had no initiative which he could not understand. If she was reluctant in making the first move, well, she really shouldn't be because they weren't living in the old days anymore. Even if the girl made the first move, it would not seem odd at all. But then again, forcing her was most likely out of the question unless he wanted a cold shoulder treatment for a week. Or maybe more.
Giving Kim Jaejoong a ring would be fine, right? It wasn't like he was going to ask him out on a date. Okay so maybe in a way, he would, just not for himself. Fishing the phone out of his pocket, he browsed the name through his contacts and finally pressed the call button. It did not take long for the call to be answered. "Kim Jaejoong?"
"Oh, Yunho? You finally called!"
Kim Jaejoong seemed happy with the call, he noted. "You couldn't have called me first, huh?" It was obvious that he was joking but Jaejoong might have taken it a little too seriously, if the whimper he heard on the other line was any indication. "I was kidding!"
"Oh-"
"Oh, indeed. So Kim Jaejoong-"
"Jaejoong." the man on the other line cut off. "Just Jaejoong."
He hummed. "Okay, Jaejoong. Do you maybe wanna go out on a date or something?"
There was a moment of silence before Jaejoong spoke up. "A date?! I-"
It was then that Yunho realised he must have thought it was him who was asking him out. Technically, it was, but it was not a date he would actually be involved in. "No! I mean yes! Yes, a date. But no, not me. I was thinking that maybe you wanna take Nana out?"
"Huh?"
"Nana, you know? My best friend. The gorgeous girl I was with. You haven't forgotten, have you?" He'd be lying if he said he wasn't nervous. His palms were starting to get a little sweaty because Jaejoong forgetting who Nana was would only scream disaster.
"I'm sorry but who?"
Yunho groaned. It ended even before it began. It could not even be considered an it because there was nothing to begin with. His non-existent matchmaking skills are failing him miserably.
It didn't matter if Jaejoong forgot who Nana was. What mattered was Yunho got him to say yes to the date. He couldn't be any more ecstatic upon delivering the news to his best friend who didn't really seem the least bit enthusiastic about the date.
"Okay I don't get you anymore." he complained while scratching his head in irritation. "I got you that date and you aren't even happy with it."
She frowned, setting down a glass of juice for her irate friend. "You said so yourself, you got me that date. I'm sure he didn't even want it. Probably only said yes because he likes you that much."
"Wha-"
"Yunho, he would have called me himself if he wanted to ask me out." Nana looked so dejected that he purposely left out the part where he basically forgot her whole existence. "I'm not that miserable for a date, really. I just want to get over Junsu."
"Exactly why you're going out with Jaejoong!"
"Your persistence is just making me think that it's you who wants to go out with him." she replied with a shake of her head.
"That's not true."
"You're the best friend one could ever have and I appreciate your help, but sometimes I wish you're honest to yourself."
Confusion was written all over Yunho's face.
Yunho was at a loss.
Yes, he was the one who wanted the date to happen but why was he not happy with it? Somehow, the fact that the two were actually out on a Saturday night bothered him to no end and not knowing why he was feeling the way he was feeling was a little too frustrating.
"What's the matter with me..." he mumbles, pacing around his living room. "I- no! No Yunho. Calm your shit. There is no need to do what you think you want to do. You- oh fuck it!"
Grabbing his wallet, car key and jacket, he stormed off his house and headed to the restaurant where the potential couple was dining at.
He was not going to be a stalker, he kept on reminding himself. What he was doing was being a good friend and make sure that everything was going well. Who knows, Jaejoong might pull a Junsu. And then he would conveniently be there to save Nana who would probably be too devastated to wonder what he was doing there.
It's all good, he tells himself with so much confidence he thinks it's actually ridiculous.
Silently cheering upon finding a good spot a few tables behind the couple, he settled down as normally as possible to avoid looking like he was up to no good. To which he wasn't, really. He was just being an unofficial chaperone for his best friend.
A clearing of the throat snapped him out of his stupor. Looking to his right, he gasped at the waiter who was looking at him like he had grown ten heads on his ass. "I'm innocent!" he blurted out uninteliigibly then proceeded to duck and hide his face behind the menu upon realising that his voice practically boomed throughout the whole restaurant.
So much for being a concerned friend.
