This is a design Katie did for me a while ago for a tattoo, and I'm curious as to what you out there in Livejournal land think about it. It would be on my right calf on the inside part. It would need to be aligned a little better for the pommel and the eagles head.

I think the blade needs a little extra detailing to look more realistic, the alignment is off like you mentioned and I'm not fussed about the crosspiece. The eagle is pretty damn cool though (and the right amount of roughness for a sword - a sleek eagle wouldn't look as good), the pommel is really nice. Overall I think it's a good rough draft of what could be a pretty hot tat.

The proportion of the hilt looks a little short to me. Of course, depending on what type of sword it was; the length of the pommel would apprear proportionally different.
Overall, I get the impression of a short sword, not a gladius, obviously, because of the tip; but more Northwestern European or Norse; circa 11th or 12th century.

Besides, if he wanted a bastard/hand-and-a-half/longsword it's probably go up past his knee, and who ever heard of a sword that bends??
