Fanfiction: "Through the Generations" - Doumeki/Watanuki

May 03, 2011 03:40

Doumeki sat at his Grandfather’s bed side, holding his palm within his own.  His grandfather looked at him with bored eyes. Bored as they have ever been.  As bored as his own.  However, within their depths reflected a sorrow that one could not understand.

“I don’t want to. How many times will I have to say this until you finally listen!”

“But you must, I haven-“

He is cut off by possessive lips claiming his own, a hand grasping the nape of his neck firmly.  Not wanting to ever release the man beneath him.

Tears flow down his face in sorrow.

“Grandfather… “

The elder Doumeki opened his eyes a bit as he turned his aged face to the one who so resembled him when he was younger.

“My grandson, listen to me, I told your father before you this as well.”

Doumeki nodded solemnly.

“Why can’t you let me go?”

“I love you, that is why.”

The smaller male laughs bitterly.

“Love will not conquer all.  It is powerless in this situation.  Bringing you nothing, but pain.”

“I don’t care.”

“Whenever you have a wish, a force will take you to the entrance of a special store. In there is wish - master.  Tell him your wish, and he will grant it for you. For a price.”

The younger Doumeki nodded in understanding, learning from a young age to accept what you see and hear as reality and not scientific laws.

“I do care though.  I can’t stand to see you hurt like this, over and over again.”

“I don’t care, all I need is you.”

“Doumeki!  Please listen to reason! We can’t be together, not in this lifetime, not in any lifetime!”

Doumeki pulls the smaller man into another kiss, arms wrapped around the smaller male’s lithe form.

“When I was younger, I attended school with two people.  One was a girl with a curse that would cause anyone who got close to her to have bad luck.  The other was a noisy dimwit who could see ghosts and was constantly haunted by them.”

The elder Doumeki paused to cough harshly, his chest muscles trembling with each forceful contraction. The contraction forces him to sit up on the futon, hands holding a handkerchief to his mouth to catch any germs.  When he pulls it away it is spotted with crimson droplets.  The younger Doumeki leans forward and braces his grandfather with a hand gently rubbing between his shoulder blades, along the curves and bumps of his spine. He lays back down, sighing in discontentment.

“Kimihiro, I will not let you go.”

Watanuki, collapses into Doumeki, hands clenching tightly to the pressed button up shirt.  He bites his lip to stifle a sob.

“Doumeki, we can’t.”

“We can… “

“The clutzy boy I told you about, wanted nothing more than to rid himself of the ability to see the ghosts and spirits, so he made a wish to the Dimensional Witch Yuuko.   She said she’d grant the wish, but only if he worked in her shop as payment.”

The younger Doumeki sat there absorbing all of this information like a sponge.

“Because I had the ability to deflect spirits him and I were partnered up together for some errands he had to run for the witch.  It was on one such mission that I met your Grandmother. “

Doumeki paused to cough once more, not quite as severe as the previous time though.

“However, this is not about her.  This is about the boy. “

Doumeki held Watanuki tightly to him, cradling him in his chest.  The light of the full moon filtered through the opened rice paper doors.  His hand lightly caressed the soft hair of his scalp.

“J- Just for tonight, we can be together… “

Doumeki’s arms tightened around Watanuki.

“You mean, forever.”

“The boy went through many hardships, and learnt the hard way that his love for the girl wasn’t real.  He loved her like a sister.  One day, while he stood next to her, she briefly touched him. When she stepped away, the window he’d been leaning on fell out from under him, and he fell three floors.”

Doumeki took a deep breath, his expression twisting  as he relived the experience.

“There was blood… so much blood.  I tried my best to help him, but it wasn’t enough.  So when I got a message from his employer to take him to her shop I did.  It was the only time I was ever able to enter.”

The younger Doumeki’s eyes were wider than usual, but not so wide as to look alarmed.

“My wish was to save him, and the price was half of my own blood.  So the boy had half of my blood running through his veins.”

“The girl wished to repent for the result of her curse and wished to save him. Her payment was to take all the scars he would have received into her body.”

The two embraced each other in the dark room. Pale, delicate flesh molded to Doumeki’s own firmed tanned skin.  Hands scrabbled for purchase and breathless pants filled the air as the two moved sensually to the rhythm of their hearts.

“Shi- Shizukaaah…” Watanuki panted sorrowfully into Doumeki’s ear.  The first and last time he ever said Doumeki’s given name.

“When the boy awoke, the witch gave him an egg to hatch.  The egg contained a small bird that he was to give the girl.  The bird was immune to the girl’s curse and would be her only friend that she could touch.”

Reaching inside his haori he pulled out an egg.

“What the boy didn’t know was that she gave me an egg as well.  However, unlike the girl’s egg, mine will never hatch into anything.  She told me to use it when the time was right.”

The next morning, Doumeki departed for work, and Watanuki cried in remorse for what he had to do next. Maru and Moro cuddled to him pitifully, trying to cheer him up. Mokona watched from his perch on the porch in sorrow, knowing full well what Watanuki was about to do.

He held the egg out.

The younger Doumeki accepted the egg from the man.

“And now… I entrust this duty to you.”

The younger Doumeki beheld the egg with wonder as he felt its power pulsing through it.

“The boy became the owner of the shop once the Dimensional Witch died, wanting to wait for her return.   He hasn’t aged even a day since then.  He will appear a little younger than you, but I assure you.  He is much older.  By now he is already 80. I love him.   I tried my best to be there for him, but he forced me out of his life.”

When Doumeki got off work that day he stopped at the store and picked up some sake, and vegetables.  When he turned the corner to the shop, all he seen was a rundown picket fence.

In panic, he dropped the bag, the sake bottle shattering and releasing it’s contents on the concrete below.

“Watanuki!”

When he reached where he knew the entrance was he punched the barrier ferociously.

“Watanuki, you can’t do this!”

“He closed the entrance way of the store, so I can never enter it again.  He wanted me to move on.  Your grandmother and  I made an agreement.  We would marry and have children, and raise them in hope that one of you will free him from his self-imprisonment.  You don’t have to abide by this, but if you don’t, please tell your children of this story as well.”

The younger Doumeki closed his fist around the egg tightly in determination, a fire in his eye.

On the other side of the barrier, hands pressed tightly against it, where Doumeki’s palms were slapping, was Watanuki, sobbing openly.  His hands slid down the barrier as slowly his legs could no longer support him as the grief struck him violently.

“Kimihiro! Let me in, you can’t just leave me like this!”

Heart wrenching sobs escaped his lips as he choked on his breath, apologizing ceaselessly.

“I’m sorry… I’m sorry… I’m so sorry Doumeki!”

“What is the boy’s name?”

Doumeki smiled softly in memory, eyes closing blissfully.

“Kimihiro, Watanuki.”

“April 1st… my birthday.”

“His too,” Doumeki grunted.

“I accept this honor, Grandfather.”

Doumeki lifted a hand and ruffled his grandson’s hair affectionately.

“Thank you… you’re the first.”

“I vow that I will save him,  I will end his suffering.  Now you can rest in peace.”

Doumeki relaxed against the pillows.

“Not quite yet, I wish to see him one more time. Only then can I rest in peace.”

Doumeki woke up inside the shop, his head resting on something soft.  A hand caressed his hair softly.

“You’re awake.”

Jolting at the voice, he sat up abruptly.

In front of him, the same  as he appeared decades ago was Watanuki.   His amber and cobalt eyes brimming with tears.

“Watanu..ki?”

Watanuki nodded sadly, a tear escaping his eye.

Watanuki was pulled into the warm arms of Doumeki, and pulled against a broad chest.  He buried his head into Watanuki’s hair murmuring softly, over and over, “IloveyouIloveyouIloveyou-ImissedyouImissedyouImissedyou.”

Watanuki lifted his hands to wrap around Doumeki’s head holding him just as tightly, tears escaping in rivers from his eyes.

“I missed you so much, Doumeki, but fate had other plans for us. You needed to move on. I’m glad you did, I’m sure Kohane was very happy in your short marriage before her death.”

“She was, but the whole time I was with her I kept thinking of you.  I loved her, but nothing like how much I love you.”

Doumeki paused, burrowing his head deep into Watanuki’s neck, inhaling his scent of tobacco and spices.

“Why didn’t you allow me to see you even once since then?  Why am I able to see you now?”

Watanuki grimaced, his frame trembling with emotions welling up inside him.

“You said you couldn’t rest in peace unless you seen me one more time… Since I can’t leave the shop, I entered your dream.  I’m sorry we can’t meet in person. “

“This is enough,” was Doumeki’s gruff reply.

“I’m sorry, truly I am.”

The two lied down and simply cuddled each other, basking in each other’s prescence.

That night Doumeki died in his sleep, a peaceful expression on his face.

“When you have a wish that you truly want granted a shop will appear to you. Inside you will meet a Wish Master, his name is Kimihiro, Watanuki.  He has been imprisoned there for more than a hundred years now.  Your duty is to use the egg when the time is right to break the spell,” Doumeki repeated to himself as he walked home from school.

“I wish I could meet the man that Grandfather Shizuka loved.

Before he knew it he was in the entrance way of a shop.

Knowing immediately that this was Wishmaster’s shop he entered the gateway.

“My name is Watanuki, what is your wish?”

“I wish to free someone from their self imprisonment.”

Watanuki’s mixmatched eyes that matched Doumeki’s Grandfather’s twinkled in amusement.

“The price for that is…”

__________

On a cold winter’s night the two sat on the porch sipping heated sake.  Watanuki glance over at him from the corner of his eye.

“You know, you really do look like him, your Grandfather.  He looked like his Grandfather too.”

Doumeki sat in silence as he observed the beautiful man.

He could see very well why his Grandfather loved the man.  He could also see that the man was still in love with his Grandfather.

As the man stood up to take the dishes to the kitchen he pulled the egg from his pocket.

“It appears that it is not the right time yet… He’s not ready to forget about Yuuko yet.”

_______________________

It was when he was twenty two that he came back to the store to find Watanuki crying softly to himself in his bedroom.

It was also then that he understands the depths of this man’s pain as they each aged another year, that April.

_____________

It was when he was twenty-five that Watanuki finally kissed him.  He didn’t feel as though he were a replacement for his Grandfather, because he knew Watanuki loved him, for him.
