Arthur/Merlin, Merlin/Uther

It takes Uther half a second to see Balinor in Merlin, and he's almost sure of what he should do.

But then the boy saves Arthur.

And then the boy saves Arthur again and Arthur saves him and it becomes a circle that never ends. Uther sees himself in Arthur, and Igraine in how Merlin appears to Arthur, and he knows (even if Balinor's son doesn't know - even if no one else knows, either) that his son, the Crown Prince of Camelot is in love with a Dragonlord's son.

Worst of all, Uther doesn't want to break Arthur's heart the way death broke his own, by taking the love of his life away.

Brilliant. This is an absolutely wonderful exploration of Uther's mind-set, and I love how he sees and responds to Arthur's love for Merlin. ♥

*clutches heart* oh anon, this is the most wonderful thing. I just adore this look at Uther. And I love seeing his memories. That little party in the cells with his two closest friends just made my heart ache. So lovely and perfect and sad in hindsight. That last line kills me. So beautiful, anon. Thank you for this ♥

This is so, so great. I love Uther-related character studies and this is one of the most unique I've ever seen. Awesome.

I love how Uther's view of Merlin changes over time, first seeing him as the son of the man who was his dear friend, and then as simply a young man, and then as the person his son clearly adores above anyone else.

You've brought Uther to life so well! I love it!

What an excellent portrait of a sympathetic Uther you've created here. His regrets over his treatment of Balinor allowed him to accept Merlin and Merlin's actions over the years showed that acceptance was well earned and even appreciated. A feeling that barely changed after realizing Arthur's feelings for Merlin.

That last line is breathtaking. Uther's leaving Arthur in good hands, hoping for a happier ending for the love story the new king will have. I'm going to pretend Arthur and Merlin get that happier ending.
