So, I Saw the 300th Episode of Supernatural ...

I'm reminded of a story I read about Jeffrey Dean Morgan attending a SPN convention, and a fan tried to take him to task for the way the writers have portrayed John Winchester since JDM moved on from the show (Jump the Shark, Bad Boys, etc.), how they took a character who used to be just a flawed parent who needed to reassess his priorities and ( Read more... )

It really was. I'm sure lots of fans enjoyed it, but as a John fan, this one was really special for me.

Thank you, dear Kink, for expressing my feelings and opinions about John perfectly, and far more eloquently than I could. I agree with every thing you said, and I loved JDM's portrayal of 'his' John. *hugs*

(PS if you haven't seen the previous 2 episodes, they are really worth watching.)

Thank you for that.

Sometimes I feel like the only fan who still remembers who John used to be, before the writers were given a blank check to make him as horrible as possible and tug our heartstrings for little Dean and baby Sammy to the breaking point. I'm not sure I even believe Kripke meant for John to be demonized to this degree. It was so reassuring to hear how JDM handled that fan at that convention, to know I wasn't crazy for believing there was more to John than that.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone.

I've always loved John's character, and although he wasn't the best father in the world, he did his best and he died to save Dean - then fought his way out of hell to save him again. I think the writers have used 'bad dad' John to give the brothers a more tragic backstory. I liked the Bad Boys episode for introducing Sonny but I didn't like John's part in it at all.

I love how protective JDM is of John, and how he portrayed him in 'Lebanon'.

Beautifully said. I still think John was a bit out of character, but yes lately the show has heaped any number of horrors upon show that went far beyond what I think he was guilty of.

It was great to see JDM back on the show. I must admit that I didn't always warm to John, especially in the early seasons, but this episode really redeemed him in my eyes. It was a joy to watch!

Yeah, that was a pretty special episode. They even played the family theme, I loved that!

I guess John has always been a very divisive subject in the fandom, I can't blame anyone for insisting he left a bad taste in their mouths. But I think (or at least hope) this episode settled for many of us that John was far from perfect, but he wasn't pure evil, either.
