More to the point, even though extremely strict gun laws _can_ decrease the number of guns available to criminals, the guns aren't the problem--the criminals are.
Just last week, the NYT published an article showing that while the city's draconian gun laws seem to have noticeably decreased "gun crime", the overall crime rate is up because emboldened criminals simply murder with knives.
And though you can conceivably restrict access to decent guns, any schmuck with a chunk of scrap metal and a sidewalk can make his own knife. All gun control does is make sure that the weak can't protect themselves against the strong.
