Thoughts on Public Art and how People Screw up a great idea

There is this amazing group out of New York called Improv Everywhere. They consider themselves a comedy troupe, but I've always thought of them as performance art, the kind of thing you would see in the 60's Happening movement. I think a couple things made the LA version fail:

1. They didn't freeze at the same time. Even the act of freezing so slow. They needed to all stop at the same time and really stop. It would have made more of an impact.

2. The space they used wasn't very big. They were surrounded by shops and trees. If they're going to do something in an enclosed space they need to do something more in your face, like the Food Court Musical.

And I agree with you, there was no joy in it. But the Belgium one, I'll admit, I kind of teared up a bit. I'd love it if they'd start more stuff like that in L.A.

It has, of course, quickly been shot down in favor of something negative

*sigh* Seems indicative of a town that's driven by such a competitive industry.

Up
