Spike is taught how to preen alicorn wing feathers, and learns a lesson about the importance of stepladders. Rarity nearly suffers a nervous breakdown over trying to find matching fabric to lengthen the hemlines on all of Twilight's dresses, until Applejack points out Twilight only has one dress and doesn't much care how it looks.
Alternatively: Twilight is awarded her student princess permit, and is only allowed to act as a princess when an adult princess is present to supervise. She immediately starts worrying about the check ride for her flight certification. Spike begins hinting how much more comfortable his bed would be if it were lined with purple feathers.
My main problem with the potential development is not that she couldn't be much of a friend anymore, but that it would permanently alter the dynamics in other ways. Even a "student princess" could hardly be expected to keep serving as the humble Ponyville librarian, and her friends would have to change somehow to keep up with her. Then again, considering how the Mane Six became national if not international heroes more than once and still get no special recognition most of the time...
I predict that Twilight merely gets a glimpse of her future before going back to business as usual until the end of the series. It may even be a malleable future for her to accept or reject eventually. I think Lauren Faust would want it that way: It's OK to want or not to want to be a princess.
