I should have had the sense to spot that idiot's condition when we could still have done something about it ( Read more... )

Hravitherav th'Shan arrived at the holodeck at about the same time as Kinnara.

He wore a studded black leather triangle vest that left his blue arms bare, gauntlets, and dark pants tucked into soft-looking boots. He carried a heavy-looking leather bag.

He stood, looked at the ground, and mumbled something.

"Lieutenant," he said.

His antennae went up, and then he said... "It would appear we are here to do the same thing."

He looked at the ground, as if making such a social gesture were completely foreign to him.

Finally, he looked up at Kinnara, who might have noticed for the first time her superior's eye color (which was gray).

"Would you care to share this program?"

She smiles once, and nods, "Of course sir. It would be a pleasure."

She raises an arm, letting her superior officer precede her on to the holodeck.

Therav raises both antennae inquisitively, and then they curl forward.

"May I?" he asks.

When Kinnara nods, he says: "Computer, run program Shan Alpha Four, location Vorothishria 42."

Suddenly, Kinnara and Therav stand in the middle of an ancient stone arena. It is night, and torches hang on the walls. The roof is crumbling, to give an amazing view of a ringed world (a banded gas giant), which takes up half of the sky. High snowy peaks surround the ramparts, and flakes drift to the ground, slowly.

"Welcome to my family's ancestral duelling grounds," Therav says, opening and unpacking his leather bag to reveal two elegantly curved blades, as well as twin hrisal. "Unless you would prefer another location and activity."

Kinnara reveals a matched set of straight blades, and they whizz in her hands, almost faster than sight, Kinnara looking focused.

Therav stands on the opposite side of a painted diagram on the ground, holding the twin hrisal crossed over his chest. He bows from the shoulders, and says, "Ushevaya," but he appears as though he is waiting for Kinnara to make the first move.
