I guess my family's rough equivalent was planning family vacations around my dad's annual trips to the Frankfurt Book Fair. We never actually went to Germany, but went somewhere else in Europe either before or after his week in Frankfurt. Or even better, our brief family vacations either before or after the business seminars my mom's old company had on Garden Island in the middle of Lake Champlain. That at least reliably involved swimming, and cabins.

Renting a lake house, as Ian and Melissa have been doing each summer for several years, seems like a good way to do a vacation. Rentals on the Outer Banks or the Jersey Shore are probably comparable. Maybe I should get back in that habit.
