talk to me about cloth diapers.  what's your favorite kind?  what's hard?  what's easy?  is it really possible for two working moms?  what do i need to get started?

We used prefolds and covers until Caius turned about 15-16 months and just got too squirmy. I couldn't deal with that two-step process anymore. We loved them when we used them! So easy to clean (just a hot wash and extra rinse) and I didn't even start shaking them out before washing them until he started eating solids. It wasn't that expensive since I bought almost everything on Craigslist. It was a little more of a pain when we went out because the diapers are more bulky, so they took up more room in my bag (and the soiled ones had to come home with us, of course, which isn't true for disposables...).

Definitely join the cloth diapering community. I learned everything I ever wanted to know about cloth diapers from those ladies. :)

i'm definitely going to look on craigslist if we go this route, and buying from lj friends who are selling.

i'm going to try to join cloth diapering, but i heard it's hard to get in. :(

For the newborn days, we really liked using prefolds and covers and All-in-Ones. We had bought a bunch of one-size pockets, but Delilah was so tiny when she was born that they didn't fit at all. Now that she's bigger, we LOVE our Knickernappies one-size pockets. They're pricey if you buy them new, but they fit up to 40 lbs and I like them the best of all of the OS pockets I've tried (FuzziBunz, BumGenius, Tweedlebugs).

I don't know if you saw my post yesterday, but I'm actually looking to sell some of our newborn diapers as a lot. They'd make a nice starter stash with the opportunity to try a few different kinds of diapers. Here's the link:

and I posted photos in the comments this morning.

As for the two working moms thing, I can't speak to it myself, but I know a lot of families make it work! Delilah is only in daycare very part-time, and my friend who watches her (in home daycare) doesn't mind using cloth at all.

if i knew what i wanted, i'd definitely consider your stash. i'm not sure yet, though. and newborn diapers are pretty small, right? jacob was 9lb5oz at birth, so i'm scared that he won't fit into them for more than a week.

did you use both the prefolds and the pockets? did you use different kinds in different situations, or just trying to figure out your preference? i feel totally clueless.

if you haven't sold them when i know more about it and what i might want, i'll definitely consider it!

I used primarily prefolds and AIOs when she was a newborn. I always put AIOs for the diaper when we were out or any time someone else was watching her since they're "easier" to use. I liked prefolds in the NB days since they take up less space in the wetbag and washing machine when you're going through so many diapers every day.

I love the pockets we use now so much that I pretty much only use prefolds if I've run out of pockets and fitteds before I've gotten laundry done.

I have kind of a bizarre system. I use pocket diapers (usually fuzzibunz) with prefolds stuffed inside instead of inserts. My kids have HUGE tushies with all that bulk, but it's really absorbent. Also, I sometimes use prefolds with thirsties covers because they are cheap and easy. :)

I never, ever ever soak anything or swish anything. I think it's gross. If something is bulky and solid enough to actually fall into the toilet, then I do that, but I don't do anything that grosses me out because it's not worth it to me.
