I've been shuddering in disgust after I heard the first samples of the american voice actors work for WK, don't know about Kenshin yet *ogles DVD thoughtfully*. Anyway, I simply can't understand 1.) how arrogant they are behaving, 2.) how they manage to carry no feeling whatsoever in their voices except pomposity and a puff of staginess. I just listened to some sample of a text spoken by Okiayu Ryutarou in comparison to his american VA on someone's LJ, and I had to stop it after the first sentence. Blergh, I say.
They do have good VA in America, but these are usually good actors as well, and they don't tend to anime series I'm afraid. I prefer the originals over the dubs any day! I was going to start Saiyuki, but the VCDs have indonesian subs, which I can't read *cries*. But better that than the voice actors shredding the essence of anime.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T EVEN TRY IT with Rurouni Kenshin, Chou the sword collector has an American southern accent! The Japanese seiyuu are perfect.

I always listen to the Japanese voice actors. After my first viewing, I have disciplined myself to at least *try* the Americans, if it's a Region 1, but usually last only minutes before turning them off in disgust. I have found only ONE anime worth listening to in English: I can heartily recommend the dub for Cowboy Bebop!

Seiyuu... gotta love them. They actually *work* at their craft. In the interviews, they spoke of the time they spent thinking about their characters, their motivations, their dreams, how to communicate them through their voices. (The first I knew by name was Koyasu Takahito, who created many fine roles, including Ran/Aya Fujimiya, the Sakurazukamori in Tokyo Babylon, and Izumi in Bronze/Zetsuai.)
