Summary: Sawada Tsunayoshi was a puzzle Hibari couldn’t solve, even after years of study. TYL.
Wordcount: 427
Notes: OMG. Hibari completely kicked my ass during the writing of this fic. I just hope I didn’t make him completely OOC. It was hard enough just making him go where I wanted, let alone keeping him in character. I… I don’t think I’ll be writing him again for awhile…

Thanks go to my beta, scarlet_pencil, for checking it over for me. You gave me the confidence needed to actually post this. ♥

Hibari Kyoya was intrigued by puzzles. However, he wouldn’t go so far as to say he liked them. He rather disliked them, in fact. The satisfaction came in solving them. He prided himself on being well informed, and if there was something of interest that he didn’t understand, he made it a point to have it studied and resolved.

Sawada Tsunayoshi was one such enigma. As such, Hibari desired to solve the mysteries surrounding the tenth Vongola. Often weak, occasionally powerful, and never predictable-his powers were constantly exceeding Hibari’s expectations. Hibari did not like such contradictory results. Herbivores should remain herbivores.

Over the years, Hibari had watched Tsunayoshi grow into an exceptional, if annoyingly softhearted leader. There were times when the solitary Cloud guardian had thought to wash his hands of the Vongola ring, and all of the responsibilities owning it entailed. He would rather not crowd, especially with a group of herbivores. Inevitably, before he could renounce his position, he would get a glimpse of Tsunayoshi’s true potential. A single spark of blinding brilliance, and he’d determine to wait just a little while longer to rid himself of all ties with the Vongola. As he had been wavering back and forth between staying and leaving, time slowly passed.

Hibari did not make a habit of questioning his own actions. He did not dwell on why he stayed on the outskirts of the warm circle of Tsunayoshi’s family. He wasn't around the others enough for it to be an issue.

Being a guardian to the boss of the most influential mafia family in Italy did come with its benefits. He could bite people to death for disrupting the peace of Namimori without consequence, and there was the matter of a seemingly unending supply of research funds.

The inexplicable trust, as fragile as Hibird’s tiny wing, that Tsunayoshi placed in his hands was another mystery to Hibari. Respect, fear, bitterness, and hatred, those were sentiments he was used to receiving. Such unwavering trust he was unaccustomed to. Only one person placed such steadfast faith in him. It was not something he had asked for, nor did he want it. It was easier to push such complicated matters to the back of his mind.

Even after ten years of working together, Hibari still hadn’t figured out what made Sawada Tsunayoshi tick. It was a good thing he wasn’t in any hurry. He was sure the solution to this puzzle would be revealed in due time. Working for the Vongola in the mean time suited his purposes just fine.
