Yay! I agree with just about everything you said (except, you know, red meat tastes goooooood ;-P But ew, six-pound cheeseburger). Especially the bit about mind-altering substances; I don't get the appeal at all.
And yeah, I don't play first person shooters, but I only hope the effort they put into the graphics of those games will eventually be applied to other things. ^.^

Personally, I was gratified by the gritty realism (surrealism?) in Doom III -- I didn't play it for the plot or for the Shooting Big Monsters With Teeth, I played it for the atmosphere, which was created by the combination of graphics, sound, and periodic audio logs found throughout the base. Besides, the graphics were so damn pretty.... tilting light sources and wrinkled, leathery skin and glowing fireballs casting inky shadows all around. Besides, considering how base a form of entertainment are first person shooters, we at least ought to make them look good
