I have heard rumors to that effect, and that Shiki is radically different from Shirou, which is a pretty big turnoff because to be honest part of what makes FSN, of all eroge, appealing to me is Shirou's personality, even with the thickheadedness and the infamous benevolent sexism of Fate. Yeah, he's kind of a schlub, but at the same time he's sensitive and endearing.
UBW is absolutely the best of the routes, though tbh I don't really hate the anime all that much (it was what got me into Fate in the first place, after all, and marathoning it with bard_linn on vacation led to lots of fun plotting that, as often happens with us because of my horrific work ethic, will probably never go anywhere). It's got its cute moments, even if as an amalgam it was too much Fate and not enough everything else, with what there was just kind of shoehorned in -- though really there's no way you could get the meat of HF into a mostly-Fate storyline, or even a proper Fate/UBW amalgam, WITHOUT shoehorning because it's a really piss-poor derivative storyline in that
