We Are The Fury @ Frankies Inner City, Toledo, OH, USA [12/26/2009]
This show is seriously the show that I have been waiting for all year long. This band is one of my absolute favorite live bands, and with the shitty year that I’ve had in general, I just NEEDED this show. I haven’t been able to enjoy a live show for so long now that I was really and truly looking forward to this with everything that I had left. This show meant the world to me, and that was before I even left for it.

I had to work 12-8PM today at the mall. Unfortunately, I got out of work late, but I made awesome time due to the fact that it was NOT snowing and there was no blizzard in sight. I have driven through TWO blizzards to see this fucking band in the past, and seriously, I was NOT down with driving through another. It must be known that if I meet death due to anything that is MidWest winter related while on the way to see this fucking band, those motherfuckers are playing my memorial service, and when I’m cremated, Jeremy Lublin better be screaming, “LET’S START A FIRE TONIGHT!”

Brooke > KTB chillin' at Brooke's house.
Anyway, I got to Brooke’s at around 9:15PM, and we hung out for a little bit with KTB until around 10PM before heading out to Frankies. We got a decent parking spot across the street from the Key Bank and headed in to catch Brooke’s friend’s band that was playing early on. I must say that they were not bad, and the bassist really impressed me. After they got off stage, I went and talked to him, pretty much wanting some contact information (my mom is always recommending musicians for things, and it’s always nice to help someone out). Jodi also came in during this band, and it was really good to see him.

Also, I saw Stephen walk in, who I haven’t seen in like, a year and a half. He’s totally grown up a bit, and I am totally digging the facial hair. Personally, I always thought Stephen was the more attractive Lublin brother, so I was very excited to actually see him. We chatted over the music for a minute about Paris before a hug and a goodbye.

During the next band, Tina and Kayo showed up. They along with KTB, Brooke, Jodi, and myself hung out by the pool table for a little bit. Eventually, Chris made his way over to us and chatted for a bit. He told us some gossip about Alan getting engaged to that Ypsi girl. He also let us know that they couldn’t get Brady to come out for the gig in the end, and if they had, it would have cost them $900 to do so. After a few minutes, he left to mingle with other fans and eventually Jeremy came over to say hi, too.

Finally, the band started getting rounded up, and we all went back in to where the stage was. Somehow we managed second row right behind the children. Yes, I said, “Children.” There were like, 10 kids hanging out at the front of the stage not giving up their spots to anyone. We had joked about knocking them to the side, but I was really cool about not doing so. Seriously, how many times have I been able to sit on the stage for this band?

Either way, when the band started, it almost felt as if I was just seeing them yesterday. That could be because the setlist hadn’t changed much, but I think it was because I guess I never really accepted the fact that I haven’t seen them in almost a year. Or, well, it could have also been the fact that all I could hear was Chris’s monitor. If that doesn’t remind me of old times, I don’t know what does. I wasn’t even standing right in front of Chris; I was pretty much dead center. They played the usual set list, and I have to say, despite the fact that Brady wasn’t there, it felt great to hear “Meggido” live again. That is seriously my favorite song ever, and OMG to hear it live one more time just made me remember why I fell in love with this band’s live shows.

Despite the fact that overall, the set was the same, some 13-year-old girl in front of me totally ruined the guessing game said that she hadn’t heard “Soap Opera” live ever before. Jeremy totally gave her a look of disgust as he was like, “You ruined it.” They played it during the second half of the set, I think right after “Hey Love.” I want to say they ended with it.

Chris > Jeremy > Alan

Chris > Alan > Jeremy

Jeremy > Alan

Chris > Stephen

Chris > Jeremy > Alan; This is my favorite shot.

Alan > Chris

Alan with Jeremy and Chris is the background.

Before the encore, everyone seriously just stood around waiting for the band to come back on. I seriously huffed, “Well, I guess I’ll have to start this. ONE MORE SONG!” And finally the rest of the crowd caught on and started “ONE MORE SONG! ONE MORE SONG!” with me. It didn’t take them long to come back on stage, and they asked for requests before busting out with “Now You Know.” For their finale, they started played “Grand Divider,” and I have to say, the entire place went crazy! Somewhere in the middle of it, people started crowdsurfing, and well, Frankie’s is not a place you can actually crowdsurf at. All I know is that one minute there was someone over my head, the next their beer was all over me, but my camera was dry. THANK GOD!

And during the moment of crowd surfing during the guitar solo, somehow Alan ended up laying on the crowd, almost right next to me, and all I could think was, “OMG he fell off the stage.” This was an absolutely EPIC moment in WAtF history. Seriously, the first time we saw them at Frankie’s in 2007, still_i_breathe and I watched Alan trip over all of his cords, and we have forever had a running joke about, “I hope he falls off the stage drunk and into the crowd.” He almost did it once, and I think he actually heard us yell out, “GODDAMNIT,” but he never has. But to see him in the crowd, and then crawl back on stage, and slur out drunken remarks was the greatest thing ever.

When they finished, we tried to get them to play another song, and Jeremy kneeled down to talk to the 13-year-old girl in front of me. I quickly piped in and asked for a setlist for my collection and Jeremy grabbed me his. Brooke stole another one before one of the kids had a chance to even attempt it. It was awesome. We still tried to get them to play one more song, but the guys soon got off the stage, and then came back and acted like they were going to, but totally didn’t. Alan, being completely smashed at this point in time, totally stood up on stage arguing with the crowd that he didn’t want to do another song. We tried to get him to do a bass solo, but all he knows is 1/3 of a Metallica riff, and he wouldn’t even play that. We tried to get him to sing. Eventually, he said, “Fuck you all!” and walked away from the mic.

As we were walking out of the room, we totally met up with Emily and chatted with her for a bit. She told us that she had just gotten off tour with Electric Six and was home for a few weeks before going out on the road again. I mentioned that we were going to hit The New Roman gigs coming up and were debating on Cleveland. She was like, “You guys should totally come! It’s going to be a really awesome show!” Emily introduced us to her sister, too, and let us know that she was planning on coming to the Detroit and Toledo New Roman shows, and that we would totally meet up then.

Brooke > Emily > Me
The best part of the entire night was when we were just about ready to leave. I wanted to get all of the guys sign my setlist. Jeremy was first, and I mentioned to him that the lyrics for “So Physical” were written on the back. He was drunk at the time and laughed as he told me that he forgot the lyrics. Chris signed it next and was whisked away into a photo. I tried REALLY HARD to get Stephen to sign my setlist, but he kept getting pulled away and giving me looks of, “Goddamnit, I’m sorry!” It seriously took like, five minutes to get him to sign it. I don’t have anything signed by Stephen, so I really wanted to get him the most. Then, it took almost forever to get Alan’s attention because of how wasted his was. When I FINALLY got Alan’s attention, he turned around to look at me, and all he said was: “I think I’m going to puke.”

“Well, don’t puke on me.”

“…NOOOO I DIDN’T MEAN THAT!”

He then proceeded to sign my set list. Then he looked at his signature, looked up at me, and said, “This one time, in upstate New York, I signed something for some girl and she looked at it and was like, ‘that’s not your signature!’ and I was like, ‘Here! Look at my license!’ and she didn’t believe me! Now, every time I sign my name, I wonder if it’s really my signature. I question it!

This somehow turned into him drawing me a little house on my setlist, and him proceeding to tell me that he can’t draw for shit. And he signed it a second time right under the first one.

Jeremy's setlist. Do you see Alan's little drawing off to the side?

Lyrics to "So Physical" and "Hey Love"
Then, he started to walk away, and I fucking kid you guys not, he tripped over himself and landed face first on the floor. Greatest moment of my life. EVER. This was seriously the most amazing moment of my life: watching Alan go down. I think he was so smashed that he didn’t feel it for a moment, but I can tell you that he didn’t get up right away, which made it even better. He seriously laid there for a minute with everyone just looking at him. No one rushed to his side to pick him up (even his fiancé) and no one was like, “Heyyyyy you okay?” So priceless!

After that, we said our peace outs to people and got back in Brooke’s car before heading back to her place. I immediately left for my drive back to Detroit, and I kid you not, the roads were great until the minute I hit Metro Airport. 275 was from there on out a sheet of ice. I do not approve of how much winter weather I drive through to see this band.

Overall, it was a really great show and it was the one that I’ve needed the most this year. I hope there will be many more to come.
