PANTS III

Mar 14, 2012 08:03

Yesterday on Tumblr, cjtheoracle replied to my pants post with this: To the Brits, these are trousers. And what Sherlock is (or perhaps is not) wearing under them is pants. pants = underpants, trousers = pants

Which brings up a very important question...what is underneath Sherlock's trousers?

Aaaand... during Sherlock's time, were zippers even invented yet? What kind of front closures were they using then? :P

In 2010? Yes, I'm pretty sure we had zippers way back then! ;P

2010? I'm confused, but since I haven't seen this series, I'm thinking it's the timeframe of the original. But then again, are you sure it's not velcro fasteners? *grins*

You weren't bothered by the comment, I hope? Fanfic writers I know refer to it as "Brit-picking" - for non-British writers to get the British terminology right. I don't write fanfic but I know a whole lot of Brits and fanfic writers and the pants/trousers thing is a real common source of amusement.

And I love this! I'm not sure which one I like best!

Not bothered at all! I know the pants/trousers distinction, but being American and since I wasn't writing fanfic or anything from a British perspective I defaulted to 'pants'. ;)

The difference in definitions for 'fanny' is also pretty funny...

Oh, yeah! Mentioning a fanny pack around Brits makes for endless hilarity!

lol.
this is random, but it reminds me of a song my friends and I once made up, b/c of a video game character who had no bag and therefore must have carried everything he collected in his pants pockets.

sung to the tune of joy to the world (all the items are actual items picked up in the game)

Joy to the world, for Ike has pants
in which to keep his stuff
a great big knife
a picture of his wife,
and kittens for his friends, and kittens for his friends,
and kittens, and kittens for his friends.

there are more versus, but you get the idea : )
