Personally, I'd remember the security researchers who gained access to corporate networks by placing trojans / worms and other malware on memory sticks, then scattering them near the smoking areas of the corporations they wanted to access. ;-)

Take a look on it for files called stuff like "README.txt" or similar which might tell me how to contact the owner.

(Not too worried about viruses, TBH.)

In theory, take it to the police. In practice, unless the police were nearby or on the way somewhere, probably bin it.

If you were going to bin it you shouldn't have picked it up!

I know, but I would have picked it up with the good intention of going to the police. It would only be later I'd realize that was unrealistic and so bin it.

Check to see if it has someone's thesis on it (just on the off chance) and if it does bung a bit of paper on the wall and/or take it to the police or university and if not see comments above :-)
