I like Othello, it is a game I grew up with (this may mean I am biased). Once you know how to play it is a matter of not making mistakes but in the mean time much fun can be had prodding it until you know it. If you haven't played it before don't let anyone spolier you.
On the digitally enhanced game side almost everything I play... everything I play since not living at Templars', is on the PS2 which has a range of game based goodness and isn't pricey anymore. It also comes in small. If that is still too expensive then there are a whole bunch of board games in the world which range from games triskellian likes to games I like (the lack of shared ground in there is a running joke

Ditto the San Juan, and I also like Lost Cities. But yes, there are heaps of good 2-player games with a pack of playing-cards. T and I have played a lot of a Nomination Whist variant, a game that works just as well with 2 as it does with lots.
